Drainage - Cameron Highland

1) The document calculates the peak flow rate for a 0.2858 hour storm duration with a 10 year average recurrence interval at a location in Pahang, Malaysia. 2) It determines the peak flow rate is 0.756 m3/s. 3) It then sizes a concrete U-drain with dimensions of 0.9m width and 0.9m depth to convey flows above the peak flow rate, with the flow velocity between 0.6-2 m/s, making it an uncovered drain.

6.3 Analisa Pengiraan Longkang
Introduction

The estimate flow is computed by MASMA 2 released by jabatan pengairan dan saliran .
In Addition , the Peak flow Discharge are compared against the design of the U-Drain.

Design Criteria:
Storm duration, d = 0.2858
ARI, T = 10 years
Location = Pahang-Gunung Brinchang
Design Manual = MSMA 2nd Edition

Solution:
1. From Table 2.B1, the fitting constant are: i = λTk
λ = 42.004 (d + θ)ƞ
K = 0.164
θ = 0.046
ƞ = 0.802

2. From empirical Equation 2.2,

i = λTK/(d + θ)ƞ

where,
i = Average rainfall intensity (mm/hr)
T = Average recurrence interval - ARI(0.5<=T<=12 month and 2 <= T <= 100 year)
d = Storm duration (hours), 0.0833 <= d <= 72
λ, K, θ, ƞ = Fitting constants dependent on the raingauge location (Table 2.B1)

i = λTK/(d + θ)ƞ
i = 42.004 x 100.164/(0.2858 + 0.046)0.802
i= 148.4 mm/hr
Determination of Peak Flow :

Equation 2.3 Q= C.I.A

360

Where :
Q = Peak Flow ( m ³/ s)
C = Dimensionless runoff coefficient
I = Average rainfall intensity over time of concentration,tc (mm/hr)
A= drainage area (ha)

therefore :
Runoff Coefficient C 0.95
= from table 2.5
Rainfall Intensity i 148.4
= mm/hr
Drainage A rea A 1.93
= hectare

Peak Flow Q = 0.95 x 148.4 x 1.93

360
Peak Flow Q = 0.756 m ³/ s

Determination of size line Drain Section :

Assuming :
Drain longitudinal slope = 1 300 0.003
Width, B = 0.9 m
Side slope,Z = 0 m
D,Depth = 0.85 m

Q=VxA

Where :

V = 1/ n Sₒ 1/2 R 2/3
Sₒ=Drain
Side Slope
longitudinal slope
R =area/wetted perimeter(A/P)
n = manning roughness (table 2.3) 0.018
A= Cross sectional area ; (B X D)
P = wetted parameter ; D+D+B
SO : A P R V Q
(m2) (m) (m) m/s (m³/s)
0.765 1.725 0.443 1.865 1.43

Check:
Qdesign = 1.427 (m³/s)
Qpeakflow = 0.756 (m³/s) OK Qdesign > Qpeakflow

section 14.2.4.2;
Allowing a minimum freeboard = 50 mm

Hence , required depth ,D minimum = 0.9 m

Provided dimension of lined drain (refer to precast concrete manufactures):

Width,w :0.9 m
Depth,D : 0.9 m

Drain longitudinal slope : 1 300 0.003

n : manning roughness (table 2.3) 0.018

SO :
A P R V Q
(m2) (m) (m) m/s (m³/s)
0.81 1.8 0.45 1.884 1.53

Qdesign = 1.526 (m³/s)

Qpeakflow = 0.756 (m³/s) OK Qdesign > Qpeakflow
Therefore,

The drain dimension are 0.90 x 0.9 m , lined drain shall be cover if velocity
is (0.6<v<2m/s)

Check flow velocity for lined drain : 0.6 > 1.884 > 2 (m/s) So : NOT COVERED DRAIN
Calculation of 0.2858 hours Duration Rainfalls

i = λTK/(d + θ)ƞ
i = 42.004 x 100.164/(0.2858 + 0.046)0.802
= 148.44 mm/hr
