Cognitive development
❖ The development of
knowledge, skills, problem
solving and disposition .

❖According to Jean Piaget,

middle childhood is entering a
new stage of cognitive
development where they are
improving their logical skills
Concrete ❖According to Piaget - concrete
operational operational stage of cognitive
development involves mastering the
thought use of logic in concrete ways. The child
can use logic to solve problems tied to
their own direct experience but has
trouble solving hypothetical problems
or considering more abstract
problems.

❖Inductive Reasoning- thinking that the

world reflects one’s own personal
experience.
❖The concrete operational child is able to
make use of logical principles in solving
problems involving the physical world.

❖ Reversibility – things that have been

changed can be returned to their original
state.

❖Reciprocity- means that changing one

quality can be compensated for by
changes in another quality.
Information processing theory
❖Sensory Memory

❖Working Memory

❖Long-term Memory
Emotional and social development in
middle childhood
❖FREUD’S PSYCHOSEXUAL
DEVELOPMENT : The Latency Stage
- all development and stimulation
come from secondary sources since
the erogenous forces are repressed.
These secondary sources can include
education, forming various social
relationships, and hobbies.
Erikson’s Psychosocial Development:
Industry vs. Inferiority
❖Industry -describe a child's
involvement in situations
where they must
perform challenging, patient
work

❖Inferiority- When a child

perceives themselves as
failing to
do their schoolwork,
❖ Understanding the Self- Children have a growing
understanding of their place in the world.( Self Concept)

❖ Building friendship

❖ Peer Groups

❖ Anti-Social Behavior

❖ Self Control
2 Major Issues and challenges
⮚ - Start to form stronger, more complex
friendship and peer relationship.

⮚ They become more aware of his or her body

as puberty approaches.
.
⮚ - Body image and eating problems
sometimes start around this age.
