TOPIC: GLOBALIZATION AND THE INDIAN

ECONOMY
CHINESE TOYS IN INDIA
By Savio Biju
How did the Chinese Toys Come To The
Indian Market? Indian Toys

Chinese manufacturers learned of an

opportunity to export toys to India,
where locally made toys are sold at a
high price. They start exporting plastic
toys to India. Buyers in India now have
the option of choosing between Indian Chinese Toys
and the Chinese toys. Because of the
cheaper prices and new designs,
Chinese toys become more popular in
the Indian markets. Within a year, 70 to
80 per cent of the toy shops have
replaced Indian toys with Chinese toys.
Why Did It Happen?
As a result of trade, Chinese toys News report on poll conducted by Hindustan Times, 2017
come into the Indian markets. In the
competition between Indian and
Chinese toys, Chinese toys prove
better. Indian buyers have a greater
choice of toys and at lower prices.
For the Chinese toy makers, this
provides an opportunity to expand
business. The opposite is true for
Indian toy makers.
The Real Situation…
They faced losses, as their toys
were selling for much less. During
1999-2003, India was importing
almost 1.2 million toys from
China every week. The domestic
toy industry was traumatised by
the loss of an estimated 80 per
cent of its market to the Chinese
toys. According to one estimate,
only 200 of the nearly 700
Competition in domestic markets for imported toys,2016 companies in existence survived.
Conclusion
MNCs play a key role in the
shaping of an industry within a
country. While liberalization
policy in international trade had a
positive impact on Chinese
manufacturers and customers who
found the products cheaper and of
good design, it destroyed the
livelihood of Indian toymakers.
