The Global Divides

The document discusses the global divides between richer and poorer countries, known as the North-South divide. It describes the Global North as generally including wealthy, economically stable countries like those in the G8. The Global South generally includes less affluent, economically unstable regions like Asia (excluding some areas), Africa, Central and South America, and the Middle East (excluding Israel). The document attributes the economic disparity partially to factors like colonialism benefiting colonizing powers in the North. It also discusses the historical terms of First World, Second World, and Third World used during the Cold War to categorize nations aligned with capitalist, communist, or non-aligned blocs.

Communist Yugoslavia
was the only eastern
European country which

Third World
The term Third World was originally coined in times of the
Cold War to distinguish those nations that are neither
aligned with the West (NATO) nor with the East, the
Communist bloc. Today the term is often used to describe
the developing countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and
Australia/Oceania.

Many poorer nations adopted the term to describe themselves.

Over the years, the meaning of the term has become an

elastic word. On this page, the term Third World is used to
identify the countries with substandard, underdeveloped, or
underperforming conditions in certain fields, which are in
great need of development.

THE TERM “THIRD WORLD”
HAS ALWAYS HAD BLURRED
LINES.
"Although the phrase was widely used, it was never clear
whether it was a clear category of analysis, or simply a
convenient and rather vague label for an imprecise collection
of states in the second half of the 20th century and some of the
common problems that they faced“, B.R. Tomlinson (2003).
II
DEVELOPED
COUNTRIES
DEVELOPING
DEVELOPED
COUNTRIES
are the countries which are developed in terms of economy and
industrialization. The Developed countries are also known as Advanced
countries as they are self-sufficient nations.
DEVELOPING
COUNTRIES
these are low-income countries with high reliance on natural resources, a weak
industrial base, poor infrastructural facilities, a lack of an enabling environment for
businesses and a low human capital index, including weak governmental
institutions
