Second World
The term "Second World“
refers to the former
communist-socialist,
industrial states, the
territory and sphere of
influence of the Union of
Soviet Socialists Republic

Communist Yugoslavia
was the only eastern
European country which
was not aligned with the

Third World
The term Third World was originally coined in times of the
Cold War to distinguish those nations that are neither
aligned with the West (NATO) nor with the East, the
Communist bloc. Today the term is often used to describe
the developing countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and
Australia/Oceania.

THE TERM “THIRD WORLD”
HAS ALWAYS HAD BLURRED
LINES.
"Although the phrase was widely used, it was never clear
whether it was a clear category of analysis, or simply a
convenient and rather vague label for an imprecise collection
of states in the second half of the 20th century and some of the
common problems that they faced“, B.R. Tomlinson (2003).
