Protection Relays
Purpose
1. A protective relay is an electric device (numerical relays are intelligent electronic devices - IED) that is designed to respond to input conditions in a
prescribed manner and, after specified conditions are met, to cause contact operation or similar abrupt change in associated electric control circuits.
2. The function of a relay is to detect defective apparatus or other power system conditions of abnormal or dangerous condition, and to initiate appropriate
control circuit action.

Semaphore Indicators
Purpose
A semaphore indicator is used in situations that require visual operating state of a device. It is used
in the mimic diagram of CRPs to indicate the close/open position of a circuit breaker, isolator or
earth switch.
1. Round = Isolator/Earth
2. Square = Breaker
33
Semaphore Indicators
Application:
1. To show position of Breaker or Isolator
Type:
2. Pointer
3. Led
34
Annunciators
Purpose
An annunciator is a device that gives a visual indication as to which of a number of electric circuits
has operated.

DC/AC Distribution Boards
Purpose
The DCDB refers to an equipment which consists of busbars, switches, fuses links, for connecting,
controlling and protecting a number of branch circuits fed from one main circuit.
37
Battery/Battery Charger Panel
Purpose
A substation requires auxiliary DC voltage for supplying power to its secondary equipments – relays,
meters, transducers and also to the control circuits of primary equipments namely circuit breaker,
disconnector. The battery system provides permanent DC supply for a substation, and the batteries
are charged through the battery charger.
