Auto Cad

This document discusses AutoCAD and project management. It provides instructions on various AutoCAD commands like offset, extend, break, trim, copy, scale, pan, zoom, hatching, line weight, and measure. It also defines key aspects of project management like scope, quality, cost, time, and resources and how changes in one can impact others. The document emphasizes that the project manager must facilitate others, be commercially and risk aware, and make decisions based on available information to deal with uncertainties.

CHAPTER SEVEN

AUTO CAD

TESFAYE A.
DEC 2023
workspace

Its products are structures and systems for

society, public services, commerce and industry
is central to the economy of all nations
major employer (job opportunity)
success of its projects is therefore vital to
individuals, companies and governments
What is a Project? Program?
In the Drawing Units dialog box, set the Length
Type to Decimal. This will set the measurement
to the default English units, metric
Example

Five Interdependent constraints on every project:

• Scope
• Quality
• Cost
• Time
• Resources
N.B. Change in one can cause a change in another
constraint to restore equilibrium of the project.
Project Parameters
Scope
• Defines the boundaries of the project. (in engineering often
called statement/scope of work)
• It is a foundation for all project works to follow:
• It is critical that scope be correct
N.B. – scope can change, how? When? Not known! detecting that change
and deciding how to accommodate it in the project plan are
major challenges of project manager
Offset
1 The offset command allows to user to draw objects parallel to other selected objects.
2 Lines, circles and arcs can all be offset.
.
3 The user specifies:
a)an offset distance
b)the side to offset the selected object.
Extend
4 This command will extend an object ‘to a boundary edge’, the user specifying:
a)the actual boundary – an object
b)the object which has to be extended.
5 with SNAP OFF, select the EXTEND icon from the Modify toolbar and:
The Break tool
• Construct the rectangle, arc and circle
• . Call Break – either click its tool icon in the Modify toolbar
• or enter br or break at the command line, which then shows as given
below.
• Command:_break Select object pick at the point Specify second break
point or [First point]: pick Command:
Trim

1 Allows the user to trim an object ‘at a cutting edge’, the user specifying:

a)the cutting edge – an object

b)the object to be trimmed.

2 Refer to Figure 12.1(e) and OFFSET the two circles for a distance of 5 ‘outwards’ – easy?

3 Extend the top horizontal ‘circle centre line’ to the offset circle – should be obvious why?

4 Select the TRIM icon from the Modify toolbar and:

Text

1 Text should be added to a drawing whenever possible.

2 This text could simply be a title and date, but could also be a parts list, a company title block,
Text fonts and styles
3 The words ‘font’ and ‘style’ are text terminology and can be explained as:
Font
Copy

.
1 Allows objects to be copied to other parts of the screen.

2 The command can be used for single or multiple copies of selected objects.
Scale

3 The scale command allows selected objects or complete ‘shapes’ to be increased/

decreased in size.

4 The user specifies:

a)a base point
b)the actual scale factor.
Viewing drawings
Pan

1 Allows the graphics screen to be ‘moved’, the movement being controlled by the user:
Zoom

2 This is one of the most important and widely used of all the AutoCAD commands.

3 It allows parts of a drawing to be magnified/enlarged on the screen.

Hatching
Hatch and Gradient dialogue box
1 Two tab selections:
a)Hatch, with the following sections:
1.Type and pattern
2.Angle and scale
3.Hatch origin
b)Gradient, with sections for:
The Scope Triangle

Time Cost

Scope and
Quality
Construction lines
1 Construction lines are:
a)lines that extend to infinity in both directions from a selected point on the screen
b)they can be referenced to assist in the creation of other objects.
Polylines
2 A polyline is a single object which can consist of line and arc segments.
3 It can be drawn with varying widths.
4 It has it’s own editing facility and can be activated by icon, from the menu bar or by
keyboard entry
Measure
5 A selected object is ‘divided’ into a number of user-specified equal lengths.
6 The current point style is placed at each measured length.
7 Menu bar with Draw-Point-Measure and:
Line weight

1 LINEWEIGHT allows selected objects to be displayed at varying width.

2 Although this may seem similar to a polyline-width object, it is not.

3 Right-click on LWT in the Status bar pick Settings and:

Line weight Settings dialogue box
a)ensure Millimeters active
b)scroll at Line weights and pick 1.00 mm
c)dialogue box as Figure 23.2
d)note the default value then pick OK.

Project Management – What is Involved
Project Manager
• Facilitate or enable others to perform.
• Must be commercially aware.
• Must be risk aware – many uncertainties.
• Have the breadth and depth of skills to deal with new problems
without having to draw on experience alone.
• To be dynamic, proactive, and continue to look forward.
• Decisions affecting tomorrow must be made today, only on the
information available today
• Get by on the best possible information.
