2. QUOTIENT RULE
To divide exponentials with identical bases, subtract the
exponents.

Simplify. Express your answer in positive
exponent only.
Simplify. Express your answer in positive
exponent only.
Direction: Read and analyze each item carefully. Write TRUE, if the
underlined word is correct. If the statement is wrong, REPLACE the
underlined word to make the statement correct. Select the word/s in the word
pool below.
Exponent
_________1. Polynomial refers to an expression that tells the number of
one
times a certain number must be multiplied by itself.
_________2. When the expression is raised to a power of zero (0), the
TRUE form is equal to zero.

Multiplication
of Polynomials
Example 1: Multiplying two monomials
(1 term x 1
term)
3 2
(2 𝑥 )(3 𝑥 )
Example 2: Multiplying monomial by
binomial (1 term x 2 terms)
( 4 𝑦 ) ( − 2 𝑦 +5 𝑦 )
2 3
Example 3: Multiplying monomial by
trinomial (1 term x 3 terms)
2
4 𝑥( 5 𝑥 − 2 𝑥 −3)
Example 4: Multiplying two binomials
(2 terms x
2 terms)
( 𝑥 − 3)(2 𝑥 +1)
To multiply two binomials together, you
can use an easy to remember method called FOIL.
FOIL stands for First, Outer, Inner, Last
Step 1: Multiply the first terms in each binomial.
Step 2: Multiply the outer terms in each binomial.
Step 3: Multiply the inner terms in each binomial.
Step 4: Multiply the last terms in each binomial.
Step 5: Combine like terms.
Example 5: Multiplying polynomial by
polynomial
2
( 𝑥 − 4)( 2 𝑥 +3 𝑥+ 6)
One way to multiply polynomials is the grid or lattice
method.
Step 1: Make a grid
Step 2: Put each term in one of the polynomials across
the top and the terms of the other polynomial
down the left side.
Step 3: In each box in the grid, fill in the product of the
term for the row times the term for the column.
Step 4: Combine like terms.
Find each product.
