8math Q1 Day 1

The document discusses identifying and factoring polynomials with a common monomial factor by finding the greatest common factor (GCF) of the terms, then writing the polynomial as a product of the GCF and other factors; it provides examples of factoring various monomials and polynomials, explaining the step-by-step process; and it poses questions about applying the concept of factoring polynomials to daily life situations.

Topic: Factoring polynomials

with common monomial factor

1. Identifies the common monomial factor of
the given polynomials
2. 2. Factors polynomial with common
monomial factor.
3. 3. Appreciates the importance of factoring
in real-life situation.
DIRECTION: Identify the common term of each polynomial
through prime factorization.
1. 2ab + 2ac – 2a
2. 20x – 12
2

3. x(a-b) + y(a-b)
What are the prime factors of each term?
What is the common factor?
How did you identify the common factor?
Common monomial factoring is the process
of writing a polynomial as a product of two
polynomials, one of which is a monomial that
factors each term of the polynomial.
Every expression has itself and the number 1
as a factor. These are called the trivial
factors. If a monomial is the product of two
or more variables or numbers, then it will
have factors other than itself and 1.
EXAMPLE: factor the following monomials:
1. 2𝑥 + 6 = 2 ∙ 𝑥 + 2 ∙ 3 = 2(x + 3)
2 is common to all the terms and 2 is the factor to both 2x and 6.
Since there is no other factor, other than 1, which is common to all
terms in the given expression, 2 is called the greatest common
monomial factor (GCMF)
2. Find the GCF of each pair of monomials.
Note! When you factor, see to it
a. 4 𝑎𝑛𝑑 8 the product of these factors is
always the original expression
Step 1. Factor each monomial. or polynomial.

Step 2. Identify the common factors.

Step 3. Find the product of the common factors.
 b. 15 𝑎𝑛𝑑 9
Example 2. Write 6𝑥 + 3 in factored form.
Step 1. Determine the number of terms.
In the given expression, we have 2 terms: 6𝑥 and 3.
Step 2. Determine the GCF of the numerical coefficients.
Step 2. Determine the GCF of the variables. The GCF of the variables
is the one with the least exponent.
Step 3. Find the product of GCF of the numerical coefficient and the
variables.
Step 4. Find the other factor, by dividing each term of the
polynomial 6𝑥 + 3by the GCMF 3𝑥.
Step 5. Write the complete factored form
 Example 3: Write 12 − 20 𝑧 in complete factored form.
Step 1. Determine the number of terms.
Step 2. Determine the GCF of the numerical coefficient.
Step 2. Determine the GCF of the variables. The GCF of the
variables is the one with the least exponent and is common to every
term. 𝐺𝐶𝐹(𝑥 3𝑦 5 , 𝑥 5𝑦 2 𝑧) = 𝑥 3 𝑦 2
Step 3. Find the product of GCF of the numerical coefficient and the
variables.
Step 4. Find the other factor, by dividing each term of the
polynomial 12𝑥 3𝑦 5 − 20𝑥 5𝑦 2 𝑧 by the GCMF 4 𝑥 3 𝑦 2 .
Step 5. Write the complete factored form
Example: Find the area of a rectangle whose
width is 2x – 3 and the length is 5 more than
the width.
1.What is a polynomial?
2.How can we obtain the factors of polynomials
using common monomial factor?
3.What concepts have you learned from
factoring that can be applied in your daily
living?
Individual Work

Instructions:
Find the GCF of the following monomials.
1. ,-,
2. 56, -4x, -12
3. ab, -axz, bxy
Factor the following polynomials.
4. 5+ 10 5. 14 + 21
ASSIGNMENT:
What do you think is the
amount of courage needed to
make up for a shortcoming?
(Answer may vary).
