IV. PROCEDURES
ELICIT Rearrange Me
(10 mins.) Divide the class into 4 and assign an Anagram for each
group. Let them rearrange the letters to form word/s
that relates to algebra. After that they will give a short
definition of the words formed and provide with 1
example.

a. tesagert nomcom fortac

b. perim scrafot
(prime factors)
c. ominomal
(monomial)
d. polomainly
(polynomial)

ENGAGE Where is my GCF?

(5 mins.) Group the students into five groups. Instruct them to
find the greatest common factor (GCF) of the given
expressions. Assign one item for each group.

1. 4x and 8
2. 6y2 and 9z
3. 8a3 and 12x2
4. 9ab2 and 15b4c
5. 4a3b, 8b3d and 18a4b2d

Let the students use any process or steps to

find the GCF of polynomials.
a. How did you find the GCF?
b. What difficulties did you meet in doing the task?

EXPLORE What’s Left without my GCF?

(5 mins.) Using the result of the previous activity, instruct the
students to divide the expressions by the corresponding
GCF. Let the students present their work in the using
the following table:

Expressions GCF
GCF

a. What is the result when we divide the expressions

by their GCF?

EXPLAIN After each group presented their work, ask the students
(20 mins.) if they got the correct answers. The teacher will now
give additional information on the concept and process
of finding the GCMF and factored form of a Polynomial.

Greatest common monomial factor (GCMF) – refers to

the common factor having the greatest numerical factor
and with variables having the least degree.

Example:
1. 6x4 and 15x2
factors
6: (6)(1), (2)(3)
15: (15)(1), (5)(3)

GCMF: 3x 2

2. 18a and 6ab

factors
18: (9)(2), (18)(1), (6)(3)
6: (6)(1), (2)(3)

GCMF: 6a

3. 4x2 and 6x
factors
4: (4)(1), (2)(2)
6: (6)(1), (2)(3)

GCMF: 2x

FACTORING POLYNOMIAL
To find the factored form of a polynomial, simply:

1. Use the GCMF to rewrite the polynomial

2. Apply Distributive Property to factor polynomial
Rewriting a polynomial as a product of polynomials of
smaller degrees.

POLYNOMIALS GCMF FACTORED

FORM

1. 6x4 + 15x2 3x2 3x2 (2x2 +5)

2. 18a - 6ab 6a 6a (3 - b)

3. 8x2 + 12x 4x 4x (2x +3)

ELABORATE
Think-Pair-Share
(10 mins.)
Let the students work with their 6 o’clock buddy.

FACTOR THE FOLLOWING POLYNOMIALS.

Fill in the blanks to complete the factoring of
polynomials using GCMF.

1. 4x2 + 6x = ___ (2x) + 2x(___) use the GCMF to

rewrite the polynomial
= ___ (___+3) apply distributive property

2. 16m5- 24m3 = ____ (2m2) - ____ (3) use the GCMF

to rewrite the polynomial
= ____(2m2 - ____) apply distributive
property
Let the pairs share their work with the other pairs.

a. What challenges have you encountered in

factoring polynomials?
b. Can you factor polynomials without a common
factor? Why or why not?

EVALUATE Multiple Choice

(5 mins.) Choose the letter of the best answer in factoring
polynomials using GCMF.

1. What is the common factor of the expressions

5x3 and 25x2?
a. 5x
b. 5x2
c. 5x3
2. What is the common factor of the expressions
12y, 4y2 and 15y2
a. 3y
b. y2
c. y
3. What is the factored form of 24x3 – 15x2?
a. 3x2(8x – 5x2)
b. 3x(8x2 – 5x)
c. 3x2(8x – 5)
4. What is the GCMF of the polynomial y3 – 3y?
a. 3
b. y
c. 3y
5. Which is the polynomial of the factored form
4x2(3 – 2y)?
a. 12x2 – 8x2y
b. 12x – 8xy
c. 12x2 + 8x2y

EXTEND

of the following
Polynomials.
1. 6x4- 14x2 =
