CNC VMC

This document provides information about computer numerical controlled (CNC) vertical machining centers (VMCs). It discusses the history and development of CNC machines. A CNC VMC contains a rotating spindle perpendicular to the work table, an automatic tool changer, axes for movement, and a control unit that processes numerical data to control movement. Common components of VMCs include rotary tables, coolant systems, and chip conveyors. Milling tools like end mills, face mills, drills, taps, and reamers are used. The document also covers tool materials like carbon steel, high-speed steel, and cemented carbide.

NUMERICAL CONTROLED MAHINE
(NC MACHINE)

Numerical controlled machine are conventional

machine which are operated on basis of statistical
values. Eg: lathe, milling, boring, drilling etc.
CNC MACHINE
COMPUTER NUMERICAL CONTROLED MACHINE.
(Machine which receives numerical data's and it will be processed in there control unit
and finally moment of work table and tool moment is attained to do the required job)
HISTORY OF CNC VMC
1. In 1952 Richard keg developed first cnc milling
machine.
But 1958 he applied for patent.
VERTICAL MACHINING CENTER
Vertical machining center is a milling machine where
the cutting head is vertical to the work table.

VERTICAL MACHINING CENTER
COMPONENTS OF VMC’S
1.Rotating spindle
Usually it is perpendicular
to work table. It is a rotating
shaft with a unit for
holding tool.

2.Work table
It is a flat which to put
the work piece directly
or hard clamping vises
COMPONENTS OF VMC’S

3.Tool changer:(ATC)
Which allowing the
selection of different
tools for different task

4. Rotary table:
It adds an extra
axis like 4-axis & 5-axis
COMPONENTS OF VMC’S
5. Coolant system
Vmc’s having recollecting
coolant system to cool
and lubricate parts
and cutter tools

6.Chip conveyor
It helps to move the
chips from work area
COMPONENTS OF VMC
7. Teach pendent & Display unit
It is an input unit where we can type part
program to execute the operation & Display unit
which shows the simulation of operation.
Axis moments of VMC
Axis moments of VMC
1. X-axis –left to right of work table
2. Y-axis –front to back of work table
3. Z-axis--up and down of spindle
4. A-axis—180 degree rotation around x-axis
5. B-axis—180 degree rotation around y-axis
6. C-axis –180 degree rotation around z-axis
TYPES OF VMC
1. 3-axis-------X,Y and Z axes
2. 4-axis-------X,Y,Z, and A axes
3. 5-axis------X,Y and Z axes and
two out A,B and C

VMC’S MILLING TOOLS
• END MILL
End mills are in round and flat bottom. End mills are
similar to drills in the sense that they can cut axial and
It is also having lateral cutting. Classified has 2 flouts
3 flouts and multiple flouts
2. FACE MILL
Face mill can not cut axially. Instead cutting edges are
always located on the side of the cutting head. The
cutting teeth's are replaceable carbide inserts.
3.DRILL TOOLS
Drill tools are used to drill
the hole axially. They are
either single pole or bi-pole.
4. TAPPING TOOL
They used to create
internal threads
to drill holes
5. REAMERS
used to enlarge the
drilled hole.
MILLING TOOL MATERIALS
1. Carbon steel
The cheapest tool material suites for low speed
operation. It loses is hardness at 200 degree centigrade

2. High speed steel (HSS)

It is the tool grade steel, having few alloy to have
hardness and strength. It works up to 600 degree
centigrade
3.CEMENTED CARBIDE
This is harder then HSS tool, it is having low wear rate,
it is high cost, it gives good surface finish.
It can operate up to 900 degree centigrade
Thank you
