GERMANY

FOREIGN AND ECONOMIC POLICIES

Germany ranks fourth internationally in economic policies due to its good
past record and pandemic flexibility. Over 2014, its score on this measure
improved by 0.1 point. The government provided one of the OECD's largest
pandemic support packages, including short-term labor schemes and
corporate grants. GDP fell 4.6% in 2020. Given the minor economic impact,
a full recovery is likely. In 2019, the unemployment rate dropped to 5%,
indicating excellent integration of 2015 immigrants. The rate dropped to
near pre-pandemic levels by late 2021 after peaking to 6.4% in 2020. Labor
shortages are now a concern. Political policies have always been based on
economic ones, which is why Germany's economic performance is mainly
viewed in political rather than economic terms by both its opponents and
allies.
