SCULPTURE
comes from the latin word “Sculpere” -
meaning to carve.

Sculpture may be the oldest of the arts.


SCULPTURE
it is a three-dimensional
form created by carving,
modelling, construction or
assembling materials.
SCULPTURE
Hard materials such as stone,
marble, meta, glass or wood, or
plastic materials such as clay,
plaster, textiles, polymers, soap and
paper etc can be used to create three
dimensional forms (artwork).
What is Three Dimensional ?
it is a FORM that has height, width and depth.

shapes that can be classifed according to the material
and process used.

is the most familiar art among filipinos.
From the transitional carving of ANITOS to santos to
CHRIST and down to the Saints.
filipinos find it rather not difficult as they are already
familiar with the ways of the wood.

ETHNIC SCULPTURE
has been done using traditional media of wood and
stone, by carving, molding using clays and casting
when using metals.
The transitional sculpture movements
in the Philippines from primitive to the
modern ones were influenced by
foreign cultures and internal
evolutions. In the midst of this
transition was the 19th century art
movement with Guillermo Tolentino as
the hero. His most popular piece wa
sthe Bonifacio Monument.

it has appeared in almost every culture
throughout the world.
In prehistoric times, clay carings fertility
figures from limestone’s and objects
modeled in terra-cotta were found along
the ancient paces as early as 21,000 BC.

is defined as the art and technique of
modeling and shaping block or mass of
material into a tri-dimensional form.
Mediums of Sculpture
Clay - is a form of soil that is soft and malleable
to touch with a plastic-like consistency.

Ice sculpture - is a form of sculpture that uses ice


as the raw material. Sculptures from ice can be
abstract or realistic and can be functional or
purely decorative.
Marble - was prized for its translucency, durability
and naturalistic physical properties.

Ivory is a type of dentine - a hard, dense bony


tissue which forms most of the teeth and tusks of
animals - which has been used for millennia as a
material for carving.
Wood sculpture - the art of fashioning or
ornamenting objects of wood by cutting with a
sharp handheld implement.
Kinds of Sculpture
Relief - these are the sculptures which are
identifies as embossed sculptures in which images
are set against a flat background.

Alto relievo ( Italian for "high relief" ) - the


figures are scluptured partly or wholly in the
round, that is, they project entirely, or almost
entirely, from the surface of the block in which
they are cut.
Basso-relievo ( Italian for low-relief; French, bas-
relief ) - is a form of surface-ornamentation in
which the projection is very slight.

Free-Standing - this is the kind of sculpture in the


round such as statues and monuments which are
either scaled or done in life size.
Kinetic or Mobile Sculptures - these are identified
as moving sculptures which in some cases are
suspended in air to move.

Processes in Sculpture
Molding - this is the additive wherein the building
up of form is done to complete the artwork.

Carving - this is the subtracting method wherein


the removal of the unnecessary portions of the
material used is done.

Fabrication - process of building a three-
dimensional object.

Casting - that are cast are made from a material


that is melted down—usually a metal—that is then
poured into a mold.
