Why Is Water Important?

Water is essential to all life. All living plants

and animals need water to survive.

Each day, try to drink around five glasses of

water to keep your body healthy.

We also need water to clean our bodies, teeth,

clothes, plates and cups.

Plants need water to grow. Without plants,

humans and other animals would not have
anything to eat.
What Is World Water Day?
World Water Day is a special day that happens every year on March 22 nd. It was
started by a group of countries that work together to improve our world.

March 22nd 2024

This year’s
theme is ‘Water
for Peace’

In 2010, “the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right that
is essential for the full enjoyment of life and all human rights.” No one should be left
behind or left without access to safe water.

resilience to shared challenges.
Where Do We Get Water From?

Most people in Malaysia are very lucky in that we can

get water from a tap whenever we want it. The water
we have is both fresh and clean. However, it is
important to know that not everyone in the world has
access to fresh, clean water.

In some countries, people don’t have taps in their

houses. They have to walk for many miles to fill up
buckets from a river, or from a well or water pump that
gives groundwater. Then, they have to carry the heavy
buckets back home again. Fetching water takes such a
long time that some children cannot go to school.
Clean Water
When we turn on our taps, the water
that comes out is clean and safe to
drink. In some parts of the world,
water can have lots of germs in it that
might make people sick when they
drink it.

Although the water is dirty, people

have no choice but to drink it and
use it to cook food.

2.2 billion still live without safely

managed drinking water (
WHO/UNICEF, 2023).
844,000,000
Roughly half of the world’s population is
experiencing severe water scarcity for
at least part of the year (IPCC, 2022).
Droughts
Do you ever complain when it rains a lot?
Countries in temperate climates have lots of rain.
Sometimes people can get fed up of it!

But for other countries that are close to the equator, there
may be months where it doesn’t rain at all. When there is
no rain, plants cannot grow properly and then there isn’t
enough food or water for humans or other animals. When
this natural disaster happens, it is called a ‘drought’. The
ground cracks, plants die and many ………animals
and humans suffer.

1.9 billion people live

in areas where there
are regular droughts.
Floods
Meanwhile, some countries across the world have the opposite problem -
floods. A flood is another natural disaster, but this time there is too much
water. The water doesn’t drain away quickly enough and homes, buildings
and schools get flooded while drinking water gets dirty.

Floods can destroy crops, damage

buildings and put people in danger.

1.2 billion people live in areas that are

in danger of being flooded and that
number is getting bigger every year!
How Does World Water Day Help?
World Water Day is a day to remember
that, sadly, billions of people around the
world do not have access to safe, clean
drinking water.

Charities, such as WaterAid, Pump Aid

and ActionAid, make a difference
around the world.

These charities build pumps so people don’t

have to travel so far to get water. Pumps go
down into the ground to bring up groundwater for
people to drink. This means children can spend
more time in school, instead of having to help
fetch water.
