Wa0013.

The document compares direct current and alternating current, noting that direct current flows continuously in one direction while alternating current reverses direction regularly. Direct current can only travel short distances while alternating current can carry power over longer distances using transformers.

ALTERNATING CURRENT

DIRECT CURRENT

PRESENTED BY SHARON. N
ALTERNATING CURRENT

An Electric Current that reverses its directions many

times at regular intervals is called as Alternating
Current.
Example:- Transformer
DIRECT CURRENT

It is an Uninterrupted, Unidirectional flow of Electrons

for about 1 second or longer is called as Direct Current.
Example:- Cell or Battery 🔋
DIRECT CURRENT ALTERNATING CURRENT

Direct Current cannot travel for very long distance Alternating Current can carry and safely transfer for
Longer distance

Direct Current flows in single direction In Alternating Current , the flow of current changes its
( Unidirectional ) directions.
( forward or backwards)

It maintains Constant Voltage Levels It does not maintain constant Voltage Levels

Waveform : It is Pure and Pulsatile Waveform : Sinusoidal, Trapezoidal, Triangular, or

Square
DIRECT CURRENT ALTERNATING CURRENT

There is steady Magnetism along wire There is Rotatory Magnetism along wire ( Helical )

Direct current are generally considered Safe due to Alternating Current may pose higher risk of Electric
Constant Voltage Shock

Direct Current is Obtained from Cells or Batteries Alternating Current is obtained from Generators and
Mains

Direct Current are Less Sufficiency Alternating Current are more sufficiency.
( It Does not sustain for Longer period of Time ) ( It Sustains for longer period of time)
DIRECT CURRENT ALTERNATING CURRENT

The Power factor for Direct Current is Always 1 The Power factor for Alternating Current varies between 0
and 1

The Stepping up or stepping down of Current requires The Stepping up or Stepping down of the current can be
Additional conversion stages altered by Transformer

Direct Current has Low Voltage Alternating Current has Low Voltage and High Voltage as
well
