Definition of Human Act

Topic Outline: Definition of Act of Man

Determinants of the Morality of

Human Act
Rev. Fr. Coppens
Human Acts are those of which a
man is a master, which he has the
power of doing or not doing as he
pleases.
PANIZO (1964)
Human Acts are those acts which
proceed from a man as a rational
being. Human Acts are the acts of
moral agents.
Human Acts
• Acts that we do with the use of free will
and intellect. They are done freely,
deliberately, and voluntarily.

• These are actions that are proper to

humans, thus the crucial element of
willful consent and knowledge of the
action must be present. One must freely
use his/her intellect and free will when
acting. Human acts reveal the value of
responsibility. or accountability
ACTS OF MAN
• Acts that we do without free will and
intellect; some are done by instinct.

• These are natural processes within the

body that continue to function without
the use of free will and reason. They
just happen naturally as automatic
responses to situations

THE DETERMINANTS OF THE
MORALITY OF HUMAN ACT
• THE OBJECT OF HUMAN ACTION

• THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF HUMAN ACTION

OBJECT OF A HUMAN ACTION

• An action whose object is bad will remain bad and nothing can improve
it, neither circumstances, purpose, nor intention. A lie remains a lie
despite the purpose or circumstance involved.
• An action that is good –Its object may become better or less good
because of the purpose.
• An action that is indifferent – It may become good or bad because of
circumstances or purpose.
THE CIRCUMSTANCE OF HUMAN
ACTION

• Circumstances refers to such things, as the act being done at a

particular time, in a particular place, by a particular agent, in a
particular manner. Moral circumstances are the criteria for assessing
the goodness or badness of a human action. Moral circumstances may
increase the goodness or badness of a human action.
Example : To strike another person for self-defense is one thing but to
strike another without any provocation or justification is another matter.
