How can we use maps to investigate rivers?
Learning Aims:
Aim: Describe the key features of a river
Aim High: Use grid references and contour lines
accurately
Aim Higher: Describe and explain key river
features using an OS map

How to accurately use a four-figure grid
reference
15
When you look at a
map, it will have grid
squares on top over it,
like the one we have
just seen. These 14
square help show us
where something is on
a map.
13
Maps will have little
symbols in these grid
squares to show us
where facilities, such
as toilets and picnic 12
areas, are. 01 02 03 04

15
The grid has
numbers around
the outside of it.
This gives each 14
grid square a four-
figure number.
This tells us what
square we need to 13
go to when we are
looking for
something

This means that
to find the grid

must find the
bottom number
first, and then the
number along the 12

Look at the map below
• There are two
schools in one grid
square on the map.
Why?
• You must
imagine that
each large grid
square is divided
into 100 little 01
squares.

Scale Drawing
• Scale drawing allows us to draw large objects on a smaller scale
while keeping them accurate.
• All scale drawings must have a scale written on them. Scales are
usually expressed as ratios.
• The ratio 1cm:100cm means that for every 1cm on the scale
drawing the length will be 100cm in real life
