GRID LINES AND GRID REFERENCES

LESSON OBJECTIVE
Understand the concept of gridlines on maps.

SUCCESS CRITERIA
1. I can read and use 4-figure grid references.
2. I can read and use 6-figure grid references
GRIDLINES

What Are Gridlines?

Gridlines are a series of evenly spaced horizontal and vertical lines

drawn on a map to create a coordinate system.

They divide the map into squares or rectangles, making it easier to

identify specific locations
Types of Gridlines:

Eastings: Vertical lines that run from north to south. They are
numbered from west to east.

Northings: Horizontal lines that run from west to east. They are
numbered from south to north
4- figure grid reference

4-Figure Grid Reference:

Identifies a specific square on the map. For example, 3452
refers to the grid square where the eastings 34 and the
northings 52 intersect.

6 FIGURE GRID REFERENCE

6-Figure Grid Reference:

Provides a more precise location within the grid square.

For example, 345256 identifies a specific point within the

square defined by 34 and 52, divided into 10 smaller parts
