EARTHQUAKE

Introduction

Earthquake is one of the most destructive natural hazards.

They may occur at any time of the year, day or night, with sudden

impact and little warning. They can destroy buildings and

infrastructure in seconds.
Causes of Earthquake

 Earthquakes are caused by tectonic forces.

 Earthquakes are generally due to the sudden movement of the rocks strata,
along faults or fractures in the crust.

 Earthquakes are also caused by volcanic eruptions.

 Sometimes water percolates so deep into the Earth that it turn into steam. This
steam tries to forces its way out which causes earth tremours.

 Earth tremours may also be produced by man by disturbing the balance in the
earth’s crest.
Adverse Effects of Earthquake
 Many villages and towns are destroyed and there is considerable loss of life
and property.

 Some places are submerged under the sea.

 Big cracks and fissures are developed on the earth surface which disrupt
communication.

 Rivers disappear and change their course.

 Railway lines are twisted.

Some Symptoms of Earthquake
 Seawater receeds from the seashore; water level in wells may either
significantly fall or rise.

 Cracks will be developed in the surface of the earth near the earthquake
region.

 Radio active randon gas may emerge from wells.

 Level of hydrogen gas on land may increase.

 Sudden flashes of lightening with thunderous sound may appear in the sky.
Precautionary Measures

 Stay in open spaces where there are no buildings or trees in the nearby.

 Inside the house, take shelter under the tables.

 Standing under the lintel above the doors saves us to some extent from

building debris, if the building crashes.

 Fire is not to be used during earthquakes.

Rehabilitation Measures To Be Undertaken
In Earthquake - Hit Regions

Rehabilitation measures to be undertaken by the Government and

local authorities with the co-operation of the public are:

1) Searching

2) Rescuing and Saving Victims

 Those who have been rescued should be offered first aid immediately and

then sent to medical camp to provide necessary medical care.

 Arranging provision for medical and food facilities.

 Dead bodies are to be retrieved and reached out to the Kith and Kin of the

dead.

 During search, accustic devices could be used to detect the groaning sound of

those buried alive under the debris. Infra-red cameras could also be used

during search for people or property.

Conclusion

State Governments should enlist the active help of the Central

Government and receive the assistance of ‘National Disaster Rehabilitation

Centre’ in saving people from natural disasters as well as notifying warnings

about the impending dangers well in advance so that relief measures could be

arranged for. Satellite phones could also be used for effective communication

during the period of natural disasters when other modes of communication

become disrupted.
