INTRODUCTION TO

COMPUTER
COMPUTER
A computer is an electronic device that
operates under the control of instructions
stored in its own memory that can accept data
(input) process the data according to specified
rules, produce information (output) and store
the information for future use.
PARTS OF A
COMPUTER
1. MONITOR - displays information in visual
form, using text and graphics. The portion of
the monitor that displays the information is
called the screen.
PARTS OF A
COMPUTER
2. SYSTEM UNIT - is a core of a computer
system. It is a case that contains electric
components of a computer used to process data.
The case of a system unit is called chassis.
PARTS OF A
COMPUTER
3. MOUSE - a small device used to point and
select items on your computer screen

COMPUTER
4. KEYBOARD - it is used mainly for typing text
into your computer.

COMPUTER
5. SPEAKER/S - used to play a sound. They may
be built into the system unit or connected with
cables. Speakers allow you to listen to music and
hear sounds from your computer.
PARTS OF A
COMPUTER
6. PRINTER - transfers data from a computer onto
a paper.
FUNCTIONS OF A
COMPUTER
1. Takes data input.
2. Stores the data or instructions in its memory
and use them when required.
3. Processes the data and converts it into useful
information.
4. Generates the output.
5. Controls all the above four steps.
COMPUTER
COMPONENTS

Any kind of a computer consists :

1. Hardware

2. Software
HARDWARE
It is a collection of physical elements
that constitutes a computer system.
Computer hardware refers to the
physical parts of a computer such as
monitor, keyboard, system unit (graphic
cards, sound cards, memory,
motherboard, and chips), etc.
INPUT DEVICES
It is any peripheral and/or piece of
a computer hardware equipment to
provide data and control signals to
an information processing system
such as a computer or other
information appliance.
EXAMPLES OF INPUT
DEVICES
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT

Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the

brain of a computer. It is responsible for
all functions and processes. Regarding
computer power, CPU is the most
important element of a computer system
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT
CPU is composed of three main parts :

1. ARITHMETIC LOGIC UNIT (ALU) - executes all

arithmetic and logical operations

2. CONTROL UNIT (CU) - controls and co-

ordinates computer component.

3. MEMORY UNIT - also known as registers. It

stores the data that needs to be executed next.
PRIMARY MEMORY
1. Random Acess Memory (RAM) - is a memory
scheme within a computer system responsible for
storing data on a temporary basis so that it can be
promptly erased once supply to the storage device is
turned off.

2. Read Only Memory (ROM) - permanent form of a

storage. ROM stays active regardless of whether the
power supply is turned on or off.
SECONDARY MEMORY
1. HARD DRIVE (HD) - stores and provide
relatively quick access to large amounts of data on an
electro magnetically charged surface or set of
surfaces.
SECONDARY MEMORY
2. OPTICAL DISK - a disk drive that uses laser light
as part of the reading process of reading and writing
data to or from optical discs.
SECONDARY MEMORY
3. FLASH DISK - is a storage module made of flash
memory chips. It has no mechanical platters or access
arms, but the term "disk" is used becauae the data are
accessed as if they were on a hard drive.
OUTPUT DEVICES

Any piece of a computer hardware equipment

used to communicate the results of data
processing carried out by an information
processing system (such as computer) which
converts the electronically generated
information into human readable form.
EXAMPLES OF OUTPUT
DEVICES
SOFTWARE
Software is a generic term for organized
collections of computer data and instructions,
often broken into two major categories : the
SYSTEM SOFTWARE and the APPLICATION
SOFTWARE.
SYSTEM SOFTWARE

System software is responsible for controlling,

integrating and managing the individual hardware
components of computer system. It is a general term
primarily used for digitally stored data such as
computer programs and other kinds of information read
and written by computers.
EXAMPLES OF SYSTEM
SOFTWARE

1. Microsoft Windows
2. Linux
3. Unix
4. Mac OS
5. DOS
APPLICATION SOFTWARE

An application software, also known

as application or "app" is a computer
software designed to help the user to
perform specific tasks.
EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION
SOFTWARE

1. Opera (Web browser)

2. Microsoft Word (Word Processing
3. Microsoft Office Excel (Spreadsheet)
4. MySQL (Database Software)
5. Adobe Photoshop (Graphics Software)
