• A subordinate clause is usually introduced by a
subordinate conjunction |kənˈdʒʌŋ(k)ʃ(ə)n|
(when, that, etc) or by a relative pronoun (who,
what, etc).
• The relations between the principal and the
subordinate clauses can be different.

«That» can be omitted: No one knows he has
arrived.
«What» cannot be omitted as it is the subject of
the noun clause.
Relative clauses

• We use relative clauses to give additional

information about something without starting
another sentence. By combining sentences
with a relative clause, your text becomes more
fluent and you can avoid repeating certain
words.
In relative clauses that is very often used instead of other
relative pronouns, especially in a conversational style:
Where is the girl that came here yesterday? (=…who
came…).
That is especially common after the following words:

all something any

little anything no
few nothing none
much every only
everything some
Identifying and non – identifying relative
clauses
• Identifying relative clause сообщает нам
информацию, необходимую для определения
предмета, о котором идет речь. Это единственные
сведения о данном предмете, которыми мы
располагаем. Такое придаточное предложение не
выделяется запятыми.
• Non—identifying relative clause сообщает нам
дополнительную информацию. Иными словами,
мы уже знаем, о каком предмете идет речь. Такое
придаточное предложение выделяется запятыми.
