What is computer?
• What’s a The word ‘computer’
computer?
comes from the Latin
word “computare”
meaning calculate.
• And, the word
‘calculate’ means to find
out the result of some
operation

Data
Data refers to raw facts, observations, or
measurements that are typically unorganized
and meaningless on their own. Data can take
various forms, including numbers, text, images,
audio, and video. In the context of computers
and information technology, data is often
represented and stored digitally.
Software
It is the set of the instructions that tell the
hardware what to do. In simple words, software
acts as the gateway between the user and the
hardware. On the basis of purpose software can
be divided into:
• System Software
• Utility software
• Device driver
• Application software
User
Computer is a dull machine. That means it
requires a user to feed data into the computer.
So, the one that feeds data into the computer is
known as user. The user can be skilled or non-
skilled, depending on the complexities of the
machine.
Hardware
• Hardware are those physical parts of the computer system that we
can touch and feel. Unlike software, we can see it even after the
computer breaks down or powers off.

• The components of hardware can be classified into the following:

i. Input Unit
ii. Central Processing Unit(CPU)
iii. Memory unit
iv. Output Unit
Input Unit
Input Unit is the essential part or unit of a computer from
which a user feeds data into the computer for processing. A
user feeds data for meaningful information. That means
that the data collected by the input unit is carried into the
processing unit. Some devices of the input unit include
keyboard, mouse,joystick,camera,microphone and many
more.
Central Processing Unit
Central Processing Unit(CPU) is also known as the brain of the
computer. It processes the data obtained from the user through the
input unit, processes it and then send it back to the user through
output unit. Just like a brain of a human, CPU too gives instructions to
other parts of the computer.

The sub components of CPU are:

 Arithmetic Logical Unit(ALU)
 Control Unit(CU)
 Set of Registers
Memory Unit
Memory Unit is responsible in the computer for storing data and
providing data to the CPU.
There are two types of memory devices. They are:
 Primary memory: This memory includes RAM,ROM and cache
memory. The data stored in this memory devices are temporary
except for ROM. This memory hands over data to the CPU.
 Secondary Memory: This memory includes SSD,HDD and many
more memory devices. The data stored in this memory can be
customized as per the user’s wish. This memory hands over data to
primary memory so that the CPU can access it..
Output Unit
Output Unit is the essential part or unit of a computer from which a
user gets information from the computer after processing. Some
devices of the output unit include speaker, printer, monitor, plotter and
many more.

On the basis of the output provided by output unit, it can be of two

types. They are:
 Soft copy output
 Hard copy output
