Computing the variance of a discrete probability distribution
Basic concepts.
Variance and standard deviation of a discrete probability
distribution.

The variance of a discrete probability

distribution is given by the formula.

The standard deviation of a discrete probability distribution is given by the formula

𝞼= ඥσ [(𝑋−µ)2 •𝑃ሺ𝑋ሻ]
Where: X= value of the random variable’
P(X)= probability of the random variable
µ= mean of the probability distribution.

Steps in finding the variance and standard deviation.

1. Find the mean of the probability distribution.

2. Subtract the mean from each value of the random variable X.
3. Square the results in step 2.
4. Multiply each result obtained in step 3 by the corresponding probability.
5. Get the sum of results obtained in step4.
6. (for the standard deviation) take the square root of the sum obtained in step 5.
Alternate procedure in finding the variance and standard deviation.

1. Find the mean of the probability distribution.

2. Multiply the square of each value of the random variable X by its
corresponding probability.

3. Get the sum of the results obtained in step 2.

4. Subtract the square root of the mean from the results obtained in step 3.

(For the standard deviation) take the square root of the sum obtained
in step 4.
Example 1:
The number of cars sold per day at a local dealer, along with the corresponding probabilities is shown in the
table below. Compute the variance and standard deviation of the probability distribution.

X 0 1 2 3 4
P(X)

Solution:
X P(X) X•P(X) X-µ
0 0 -2.2 4.84 µ=
1 -1.2 1.44
2 -0.2 0.04 =15.6 or 1.56
3 0.8 0.64
4 1.8 3.24
𝞼= = 1.25
Alternate Solution

X P(X) X•P(X)
0 0 0 0
1 1 µ=
2 4
2 64
3 9 ¿ 𝑋 • 𝑃 ( 𝑋 )= 𝑜𝑟 6.4
4 16
∑ 10
¿ 6.4 − 4.84= 1.56

=1.56
𝞼== 1.25
Example 2: X 0 1 2 3
P(X)

X P(X) X•P(X) X-
0 0 -1.5 2.25
1 -0.5 0.25 µ=12/8 or 1.5
2 0.5 0.25
3 1.5 2.25

𝞼= =0.87
Alternate Solution:
X P(X) X•P(X)

0 0 0 0
µ=12/8 or 1.5
1 1

2 4
3-2.25 = 0.75
3 9

𝞼= =0.87
