Terms
UNDEFINED TERMS VS. DEFINED TERMS

Undefined Terms
 Described without using other terms
Points, Lines, Planes

 See pg. 235 of your textbook

Defined Terms
 Described using other defined or undefined terms
Angles, Polygons

 Ex. An angle is formed with two noncollinear rays

with common endpoint
Postulates/Axioms
 Statements assumed to be true
 No need to be proven

Theorems
 Statements which need a proof

Corollary
 Theorems that is direct consequence of
another theorem
EXAMPLES
Postulate
 Two points make a line
 Three points make a plane

Theorem
 If two lines intersect, then they
intersect at exactly one point.
Time to recall some definitions.

1. Angle whose measures less than 90 degrees.

2. Angle whose measures exactly 90 degrees.

less than 180 degrees.
4. Two angles whose sum of the measures is 90
degrees.
5. Two angles whose sum of the measures is 180
degrees.
6. Adjacent angles which are supplementary.
7. Two nonadjacent angles which are equal in
measure and formed by two intersecting
lines.
8. A plane figure with three or more sides.
9. A polygon with three sides.
10.A triangle with three equal sides.

TERMS
DEFINITION, POSTULATES , THEOREMS, AND PROPERTIES
DEFINITIONS:
 MIDPOINT
 The midpoint of a segment is the point that divides the segment
into two congruent segments.
CONGRUENT SEGMENTS: TWO LINES ARE
CONGRUENT IF THEY HAVE EQUAL MEASURES.
CONGRUENT ANGLES: TWO ANGLES ARE CONGRUENT IF THEY HAVE EQUAL
MEASURES.
PERPENDICULAR LINES ARE TWO INTERSECTING LINES FORMING A RIGHT
ANGLE.
PARALLEL LINES: ARE LINES
THAT DO NOT MEET.
AN ACUTE ANGLE IS AN ANGLE WITH MEASUREMENT
LESS THAN 90°.
A RIGHT ANGLE IS AN ANGLE WITH MEASUREMENT AT
EXACTLY 90°.
AN OBTUSE ANGLE IS AN ANGLE WITH MEASUREMENT
MORE THAN 90° BUT LESS THAN 180°.
COMPLEMENTARY ANGLES ARE TWO
ANGLES WHOSE SUM OF THE MEASURES
IS 90°.
SUPPLEMENTARY ANGLES ARE TWO
ANGLES WHOSE SUM OF THE MEASURES
IS 180°
VERTICAL ANGLES ARE TWO NONADJACENT ANGLES FORMED BY TWO
INTERSECTING LINES.
LINEAR PAIRS ARE TWO ADJACENT ANGLES WHICH ARE
SUPPLEMENTARY.
ANGLE BISECTOR IS A RAY WHICH DIVIDES AN ANGLE
INTO TWO CONGRUENT ANGLES.
THE SEGMENT BISECTOR IS LINE, RAY, SEGMENT, OR
PLANE THAT INTERSECTS A SEGMENT AT ITS MIDPOINT.

PROPERTIES OF EQUALITY
1. Addition Property of Equality (APE)
If a = b, then a + c = b + c x=y; x +3=y+3
2. Subtraction Property of Equality (SPE)
If a = b, then a – c = b – c x=y; x -3=y-3
3. Multiplication Property of Equality (MPE)
If a = b, then ac = bc x = y ; x (2) = y (2)
4. Division Property of Equality (DPE)
If a = b, then a/c = b/c x = y ; x/5 = y/5
PROPERTIES OF
5. Reflexive Property of Equality (RPE)
EQUALITY
a=a 8=8
6. Symmetric Property of Equality (SyPE)
If a = b, then b = a x=y;y=x
7. Transitive Property of Equality (TPE)
If a = b and b = c, then a = c x = y and y = z; x = z
8. Law of Substitution
If a + b = c and a = x, then x + b = c
a + 3 = 5 and a= 2 ; 2 + 3 = 5
WHAT PROPERTY?
1. x + 4 = 5 3. a = b , b = m then a= m
x + 4 (-4) = 5 – 4
4. 3x + 5= 8, x = 1
2. y – 6 = 10 3 (1) + 5 = 8
y – 6 (+6) = 10 + 6 8=8
