The gerund can be used:
1. As the subject
Walking is the best form of exercise
2. As the object of a verb
I love walking in the morning
3. As the object of a preposition
We can burn a lot of calories by
walking.
4. As a subjective complement
My favorite form of exercise is walking.
As the subject of a verb
When a gerund is used as the subject of a verb,
it is placed at the beginning of a sentence.
Reading romantic novels is my favourite pastime.

Smoking is hazardous to health.

Climbing mountains can be dangerous if we are not careful.

A baby’s crying woke me up last.

Walking from here to the local supermarket takes only five


minutes.
As the object of a verb
When a gerund is used as the object of a verb
in a sentence, it is placed after the verb.

She tried to avoid getting involved in their quarrels.

He enjoys acting.

Mary disliked listening to pop music.

They hate eating fatty foods.

We all enjoy reading a good book.


Note: The following words are followed
by gerunds, not infinitives:

Acknowledge , admit , anticipate , appreciate , avoid ,


celebrate , defer , delay , deny , detest , dislike , like ,
consider , doubt , enjoy , escape , excuse , fancy ,
finish , forgive , remember ,imagine , include , keep ,
mention , mind , miss , propose , pardon , postpone ,
practice , prevent , recall , recollect , report , resent ,
resist , risk , save , stand , suggest , tolerate ,
understand , be worth , be busy
As a object of a preposition
A gerund can also be used as the object of a
preposition. In this case, the gerund follows the
preposition.
My brother is thinking of changing his job.

She is fed up with teaching English.

I look forward to seeing you in the summer.

I was interested in painting.

He persisted in carrying out the plan.


Notes1: There are two exceptions----
except and but .

e.g There was nothing left for us to do except complain


to the Consumer Council.

He did nothing but (to) watch television yesterday.

Notes2: In the following phrases, to is a


preposition.

used to, averse to, closed to, object to, devoted to,
when it comes to, opposed to, susceptible to,
look forward to, accustomed to, confessed to, key to
As a subjective complement

Her favorite activity is dancing.


The secret to happiness is finding
joy in little things.
The hardest part of moving on is

that person anymore
Underline the gerunds in each sentence and identify its
function.
• 1. Swimming is good way to burn calories
and help strengthen your lower body.
• 2.She enjoys baking puto cake for snacks.
• 3. I am tired of working for more than 12
hours a day.
• 4. He was watching TV when he heard a
loud bang.
• 5. Cali loves playing guitar.
• 6.Accepting your mistake is a sign
of being humble.
• 7. Pain is a part of moving on.
• 8.Love is letting go if the situation
calls for it.
• 9. My friend and I talked about
finding real love.
• 10. I missed going out with him.
11. They are capable of doing hard
work.
12. Apologizing to me isn't enough
this time.
13. She is afraid of firing guns.
14. He made running a priority.
15. Brushing your cats keeps them
happy and healthy.
16. What she cares about most is earning a lot of
money.
17. The thing he hates more than anything is waking

18.Between cooking and cleaning, he doesn’t have
