Classification of Pumps According to Performance

1.4 Types of Centrifugal Pumps

Centrifugal pumps can be categorized in various ways. Some of the main types are
on the following basis:
Orientation of the Pump Shaft Axis
This refers to the plane on which the shaft axis of the pump is placed. It
is either horizontal or vertical
Number of Stages
This refers to the number of sets of impellers and diffusers in a pump. A set forms a
stage and it is usually single, dual, or multiple (more than two) stages
Suction flange orientation
This is based on the orientation of the pump suction flange. This orientation could
be horizontal (also known as End) or vertical (also known as Top)
Casing Split
This classification is based on the casing split. It is either Radial (perpendicular to
shaft axis) or Axial (plane of the shaft axis)
Bearing support
Bearing support this is judged based on the location of the bearings supporting the
rotor. If the rotor is supported in the form of a cantilever an overhung type of
pump. When the impellers on the rotor are supported with bearings on either side,
the pump is called as an in-between bearings pump
Pump support
This refers to how the pump is supported on the base frame. It could be a center-
line, support or foot-mounted support.
Shaft Connection
The closed coupled pumps are characterized by the absence of a coupling between
the motor and the pump. The motor shaft has an extended length and the impeller
is mounted on one
Sealless Pumps

1- Canned pumps: In the construction of this second type of sealless pump, the
rotor comprises of an impeller, shaft, and the rotor of the motor. These are
housed within the pump casing and a containment shell
2- Magnetic drive pumps: In magnetic drive pumps, the rotor comprises of an
impeller, shaft, and driven magnets. These housed within the pump casing and the
containment shell ensures that the usually hazardous/toxic liquid is contained
within a metal shell
1.5 Centrifugal Pump Standards
In order to bring about uniformity and minimum standards of design and
dimensional specifications for centrifugal pumps, a number of
centrifugal pump standards have been developed. These include the API
(American Petroleum Institute), ISO (International Standards
Organization), ANSI (American National Standards Institute), DIN
(German), NFPA (Nation Fire Protection Agency), and AS-NZ (Australia–
New Zealand).

Some of the famous standards, which are used in the development and
manufacture of centrifugal pumps, are API 610, ISO 5199, 2858, ANSI
B73.1, DIN 24256, NFPA-21.

In addition to the above, there are many National
Standards. Some of these are:
• France: NF E 44.121
• United Kingdom: BS 5257
• German: DIN 24256
• Australia & New Zealand: AS 2417-2001, grades 1 and
Usually, the service criticality or application of the pump
forms the deciding factor for a choice of standard. A
critical refinery pump handling hazardous hydrocarbons
would be in all probability built as per standard API 610
Pump type OH1 :Foot-mounted single-stage overhung pumps shall be
designated pump type OH1. (This type does not meet all the
requirements of this International Standard.
Pump type OH2: Centreline-mounted single-stage overhung pumps shall
be designated pump type OH2. They have a single bearing housing to
absorb all forces imposed upon the pump shaft and maintain rotor
position during operation. The pumps are mounted on a baseplate and
are flexibly coupled to their drivers.
Pump type OH3: Vertical in-line single-stage overhung pumps with
separate bearing brackets shall be designated pump type OH3. They
have a bearing housing integral with the pump to absorb all pump loads.
The driver is mounted on a support integral to the pump. The pumps
and their drivers are flexibly coupled.
Pump type OH4: Rigidly coupled vertical in-line single-stage overhung
pumps shall be designated pump type OH4. Rigidly coupled pumps have
their shaft rigidly coupled to the driver shaft. (This type does not meet
all the requirements of this International Standard.
Pump type OH5: Close-coupled vertical in-line single-stage overhung
pumps shall be designated pump type OH5. Closecoupled pumps have
their impellers mounted directly on the driver shaft. (This type does not
meet all the requirements of this International Standard.
Pump type OH6:High-speed integral gear-driven single-stage overhung pumps
shall be designated pump type OH6. These pumps have a speed increasing gearbox
integral with the pump. The impeller is mounted directly to the gearbox output
shaft. There is no coupling between the gearbox and pump; however, the gearbox
is flexibly coupled to its driver. The pumps may be oriented vertically or
horizontally.
Pump type BB1: Axially split one- and two-stage between-bearings
pumps shall be designated pump type BB1
Pump type BB2: Radially split one- and two-stage between-bearings
pumps shall be designated pump type BB2
Pump type BB3: Axially split multistage between-bearings pumps shall
be designated pump type BB3
Pump type BB4: Single-casing radially split multistage between-bearings
pumps shall be designated pump type BB4. These pumps are also called
ring-section pumps, segmental-ring pumps or tie-rod pumps. These
pumps have a potential leakage path between each segment. (This type
does not meet all the requirements of this International Standard
Pump type BB5: Double-casing radially split multistage between-
bearings pumps (barrel pumps) shall be designated pump type BB5
Pump type VS1: Wet pit, vertically suspended, single-casing diffuser
pumps with discharge through the column shall be
designated pump type VS1
Pump type VS2: Wet pit, vertically suspended single-casing volute
pumps with discharge through the column shall be designated pump
type VS2
Pump type VS3: Wet pit, vertically suspended, single-casing axial-flow
pumps with discharge through the column shall be
designated pump type VS3.
Pump type VS4: Vertically suspended, single-casing volute line-shaft
driven sump pumps shall be designated pump type VS4
Pump type OH5: Close-coupled vertical in-line single-stage overhung
pumps shall be designated pump type OH5. Closecoupled pumps have
their impellers mounted directly on the driver shaft. (This type does not
meet all the requirements of this International Standard.
Pump type VS6: Double-casing diffuser vertically suspended pumps shall
be designated pump type VS6
