Kinematic and Dynamic Analysis

of Cam and Follower Using

Microsoft Excel
A presentation for Theory of Machines,
Made under the guidance of Prof. RC Singh & Prashant Rathi Sir

Cam
Mechanism
• A cam is a rotating or
sliding piece in a
mechanical linkage used
especially in transforming
rotary motion into linear
motion.
• Cam is a mechanical
component which is a
rotating circle or ellipse
about the minor axis of
the Follower.
• Cam’s shape is usually an
oval or an imperfect circle
or an eclipse.
Follower
• A follower is a
mechanical component
concerning which, the
Cam rotates in an
oscillatory or circular
motion. Follower inhibits
the push and pulls of the
Cam. A follower is used
to transfer the motion to
the required machine
part.
• The Follower rotates in
an oscillating or circular
arc. The mechanism for
Cam and the mechanism
for Followers depend
upon each other so that
the main mechanism of
Cam and Followers.

MECHANISM

Kinematic Analysis…
• The cam profile can be better
visualized by imagining the cam to
remain stationary while the contact
points between cam and follower
revolves round the cam in the
opposite sense of the actual cam
rotation.
Which helps us determine x and y
Partial derivative
During the rise and fall regions of the follower, 𝜌 is
varied according to the shape of the cam profile and it
remains constant during the dwell position, given by:

Now, in this analysis, since we’re only interested in Cycloidal and

simple harmonic motion, therefore :

Cycloidal motion:

Simple harmonics motion:

Where,
Constant velocity: h=Lift of the follower
Θ=Angular displacement of cam
Β=Angle of rise
Constant Acc. & y=vertical displacement of follower
Retardation:
Dynamic
Analysis:
With the equations:

ẏ = Velocity of follower,
ӱ = Acceleration of the follower,
ꙍ2 = Angular Velocity of Cam,
T2= Torque delivered to the cam,
F32 = Reaction of link 3 on link2,
m = Mass of follower,
Fs = Spring force,
P = Force due to load.

All the kinematic parameters will be calculated with the help of computer
program
Free body diagrams The resultant force acting on the follower, link 4 consists of the
of Cam and Follower following forces:-
i. Reaction due to link3 on link4, F34,
ii. Reactions at support due to link1 on link4, (F14)B and (F14 )D,
iii. Inertia force due to mass of follower, (-m ӱ),
iv. Spring force, Fs,
v. Force due to load, P

• Negative sign ensures the downward force remains

in contact with the cam until it reaches a critical
speed.
• After which it becomes positive and starts acting in
the upward direction which lifts the follower.
• This is known as jump of follower and results in
undesired outcome/performance.
Force Polygon
RESULTS
The results obtained are for
every 10o rotation of the cam
Considering
h = 0.018m,
w2 = 62.83 rad/sec,
m = 1.6 kg, and
β = 1500

Wrap-
Up
• To understand the motion of the cam and follower we used kinematic
analysis.
• Dynamic analysis was done and analytical method was used as it less
time consuming and more accurate.
• The calculations were done in MS-Excel. And using the data obtained,
graphs were drawn for displacement, velocity, torque and other
forces.
• And we concluded that the resultant force decides the critical angular
velocity of the cam, which is essential and thus knowledge of the
resultant force is crucial.
