What is the relationship of verbal
communication and non-verbal
communication?
• Verbal communication is using
speech or spoken word to
exchange information, emotions,
and thoughts. Conversely, non-
verbal communication is

Nonverbal communication can play five
roles:

Repetition: It repeats and often strengthens the


message you're making verbally.
Contradiction: It can contradict the message you're
trying to convey, thus indicating to your listener that
you may not be telling the truth.
Substitution: It can substitute for a verbal message.
For example, your facial expression often conveys a far
more vivid message than words ever can.
Complementing: It may add to or complement your
verbal message. As a boss, if you pat an employee on
the back in addition to giving praise, it can increase the
impact of your message.
Accenting: It may accent or underline a verbal
message. Pounding the table, for example, can
underline the importance of your message.

8 DIFFERENT TYPES OF NONVERBAL
COMMUNICATION
1. Kinesics – Body movement and gestures
Gestures and body movements are deliberate signals that send out an
impactful message to your team members.

2. Vocalics – Quality of voice


Nonverbal communication considers the pitch, volume, rate, and vocal quality
of the person conveying information.

3. Haptics – Sense of touch


Haptic communication involves the sense of touch. You can use touch to send
out a piece of subtle information. Haptics are primarily involved when you
want to appreciate someone.
4. Proxemics – Physical space and distance
Distance between you and your team members indicates the conversation’s
comfort level. This helps ensure the smooth flow of information.

5. Chronemics - How quickly you respond in communication affects the overall


value and quality of the interaction.

6. Physical Appearance - Your height, weight, and overall look can influence
how others perceive you, especially in terms of leadership.

7. Artifacts - Your clothes and accessories create a strong first impression,


shaping how others see you.

8. Digital Nonverbal Cues - In online settings, things like response time and
profile pictures impact how people perceive you, similar to how appearance
does in person.

1. Body language refers to your body movements
which include eye contact, facial expressions, posture,
and gesture.
