DIGITAL SAT MATH

OVERVIEW
•Two math modules:
• Each is 35 minutes long, 22 questions

•Answer what you know first

•What you know from IB Math is probably more than enough so you
can speedrun the slides
•Only watch the videos on what you’re not sure on APART from the
Desmos videos. Watch the first one
DESMOS
•DESMOS IS YOUR BEST FRIEND.
•Only use your GDC when it will be faster: simple addition,
multiplication…
•Knowing how to use it can easily improve your score by 100 points.
•AGAIN, WATCH THIS:
• https://youtu.be/-pGNBb8M3LQ?si=OUmdyEdXT0XU9mea (MOST IMPORTANT
ONE)
• https://youtu.be/onu5_EyTH_Y?si=RqvI4ni_R2-mUKmn (some useful stuff as well)
EXPONENTS
& RADICALS
•Watch this (only if you’re not
sure at all, otherwise it’s a
waste of time):

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
•You should know how to:
• Combine like terms
• Simplify fractional expressions
• Expand terms in brackets
• Adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying fractions

•Common expansions that you should memorise:

MANIPULATING
& SOLVING
EQUATIONS
•Always remember to combine
like terms
•Square equations correctly
MANIPULATING
& SOLVING
EQUATIONS
•Square root equations
correctly:
MANIPULATIN
G & SOLVING
EQUATIONS
• Factor and isolate variables
MANIPULATIN
G & SOLVING
EQUATIONS
• Solving for expressions
rather than a variable
MANIPULATING & SOLVING
EQUATIONS
•Try and avoiding dividing or multiplying out expressions:
• Dividing by an expression can get rid of a solution
• Multiplying by an expression can give rise to extraneous solutions

•Just use Desmos, but if you want to learn how to calculate it by

hand:
OTHER TYPES
OF EQUATION
QUESTIONS
• You should be able to match terms:
NUMBER OF
SOLUTIONS
• Use Desmos to graph the left hand side and
right hand side separately

Infinitely Many Solutions

• An equation has infinitely many solutions
when both sides of the equation are
equivalent.
• If you graph each side of the equation on
Desmos, the lines will overlap (the lines are
equal at every point)

No Solutions
• An equation has no solutions when the lines
are parallel to each other.
• When graphed, the lines are parallel
NUMBER OF SOLUTIONS
Using Desmos
The lines do not intersect,
therefore no solutions
ABSOLUTE VALUE
•You could solve by hand but Desmos is easier
FUNCTIONS
•Your IB math knowledge is good enough
•You should be able to:
• Find x-intercepts/zeros/roots (all these terms can be used in the SAT)
• Find y-intercept. This is f(0)
• Know when a rational function is undefined (when the denominator is equal to
zero)
LINES & LINEAR
RELATIONSHIPS
•You should be able to:
• Get the slope of a line
• Get the x-intercept
• Get the y-intercept

•Other things you should know:

• Parallel lines have the same slope
• The product of the slopes of perpendicular slopes is -1
INTERPRETING LINEAR
MODELS
•You should know what each part of the equation: f(x)=mx+c means
when used in scenarios
• m – rate of change (increase or decrease)
• c – initial value

•You should also be able to set up your own linear models

PERCENT
EXPONENTIAL & LINEAR
MODELS
•Most common questions have to do with compound interest which
is a form of exponential growth
•You should be able to recognise and build exponential models in
the form:

•Unlike exponential growth, linear growth is at a constant rate

•Watch this: https://youtu.be/n8AWZ-cvJIY?si=UirH-9C5nt9eM2GS
QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
•You should know:
• How to get the roots
• The quadratic formula
• The discriminant and the number of solutions
• The sum of solutions
• The product of solutions

•Again, use Desmos. But if you really need to:

https://youtu.be/fQG8oAsNy6g?si=NqhTsI_eoYfWIN6w
QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS
•You should know:
• The standard form
• How the coefficient of a determines whether the parabola opens up or down
• Intercept form
• Getting the axis of symmetry
• Getting the vertex
• The vertex is equal to the average of the roots
• -b/2a
• Vertex form
• The discriminant
SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS
•The solution to a system is the intersection of the two lines.
•A system has infinitely many solutions when one equation can be
manipulated to get the other.
•A system has no solutions when the equations are equivalent
except from their constants.
•Use Desmos
INEQUALITIES
•Use Desmos, it shades the false regions
FUNCTION
TRANSFORMATI
ONS
Horizontal and vertical
translations are the most
common.
Use Desmos
ANGLE THEOREMS
Exterior angle theorem
ANGLE THEOREMS
Parallel lines
ANGLE THEOREMS
Sum of interior angles of a polygon
TRIANGLES
•You should know:
• The difference between equilateral and isosceles triangles
• Pythagorean theorem
• Special right triangles
• Congruent triangles
• Similar triangles
• Triangle similarity theorems

•Watch this: https://youtu.be/EBVt9Kz_q_U?si=VIllY-o4_dhxaRSC

CIRCLES
•Arc length and arc measure
• Arc length – actual distance along a circle from one point to another
• Arc measure – the angle between two points on the circle
CIRCLES
•Inscribed angles
•Watch this:
U?si=VIllY-o4_dhxaRSC
CIRCLES
•Equation of a circle
•Watch this:
oXg?si=pg6CWhfiIi5Jki2r
RADIANS
•Only thing you need to know is:
TRIGONOMETRY
oRemember SOH-CAH-TOA
oThe sine of an angle is equal to the cosine of the complementary angle:
oThe cosine of an angle is equal to the sine of the complementary angle:
AREA, PERIMETER &
VOLUME
•You should know how to calculate
the area and perimeters of:
• Square
• Rectangle
• Parallelogram
• Trapezium
AREA, PERIMETER &
VOLUME
•You should know how to
calculate the surface area and
volume of:
• Cube
• Right rectangular prism
• Right circular prism
• Sphere
• Cone
• Square pyramid
CHANGES IN
AREA &
VOLUME
•You should know how
changes affect area and
volume
SIMILAR
POLYGONS
& SOLIDS
• If two polygons are similar,
then the ratio of their areas
is equal to the square of the
ratio of their corresponding
side lengths.
• If two solids are similar, then
the ratio of their volumes is
equal to the cube of the
ratio of their corresponding
dimensions.
DENSITY
•Just one formula: density=mass/volume
PROBABILITY
•Only simple probability is tested.
•Watch this: https://youtu.be/9Mu9Miy-Kc8?si=4V79ZGaT8AN8cfeR
STATISTICS
•Mean – average of all values
•Median – number in the middle of a dataset
•Mode – most repeated number
•Range – difference between highest and lowest value
•Standard deviation – measure of how spread out values in the
dataset are; measures the extent to which values ‘deviate’ from the
mean
• Watch this: https://youtu.be/s9LDUDl2MwA?si=kvZV_cjsha-bCzZx

•When a new value is added to a data set, it brings the mean up if it

is greater than the existing mean and pulls the mean down if it is
less than the existing mean.
BOX PLOTS
•Has five statistical measures:
1. Minimum
2. Q1 (First quartile)
3. Median (Q2)
4. Q3 (Third quartile)
5. Maximum

• You don’t need to know how to plot, just to interpret

• Watch this:
https://youtu.be/SNwtYVREPkQ?si=D7dCiF9wOaxKgs1-
SAMPLING
•You should be able to apply sample results to a larger population
(generalizability)
•This includes the associated margin of error
•The margin of error is influenced by two factors:
1. Sample size (increasing sample size reduces margin of error)
2. Spread in the population data set (increasing spread decreases margin of error)
SCATTERPLOTS
•You should be able to interpret scatterplots and test lines of best fit
