Represent the ff. real-life situations as a function.

2.
Squares of side x are cut from each corner
of an 8 in x 5 in rectangle, so that its sides
can be folded to make a box with no top.
Write a function in terms of x that can
represent the volume of this box.
Function or Not?
(a). h = {(0,0), (1,1), (2,4),…, ,
…}
x -2 -1 0 1 2
y 9 4 0 2 9
(b).

(c). (d).
Function or Not?

(e). (f).
Objectives

1. Represent real-life situations

using function, including
piecewise functions.
2. Find the domain of a function.
Definition
The domain of a relation is the
set of all possible values that
the variable x can take.
Find the domain and range of the ff.
(a). y = 2x + 1 (g). y = |x + 2|

(b).
(c).
(d).
(e).
(f).
Find the domain of the ff.

Definition

Functions which are represented by a

combination of equations, each
corresponding to a part of the domain
are called piecewise functions.
Examples of piecewise functions
Piecewise function as representation of real-life situations
Example 1.
A school’s fair committee wants to sell t-
shirts for their school fair. They found a
supplier that sells t-shirts at a price of
P175.00 a piece but can change P15,000
for a bulk order of 100 t-shirts and P125.00
for each excess t-shirt after that. Use a
piecewise function to represent the cost in
terms of the number of t-shirts purchased.
Piecewise function as representation of real-life situations
Example 2.
A multicab ride from Matalam to
Kidapawan costs P15.00 for the first 4
kilometers and each additional integer
kilometre adds P3.00 to the fare. Use a
piecewise function to represent the cab
fare in terms of the distance d in
kilometre.

Example 3.
Represent the piecewise
function for the
parking charges
shown on the sign.
Sketch the graph
and find the domain & range
of the function.
Group Activity
Brainstorm with your group. Represent the
real-life situation into piecewise function.
Group 1.
The cost of hiring a catering service to serve
food for a party is P150 per head for 20 persons
or less, P130 per head for 21 to 50 persons, and
P110 per head for 51 to 100 persons. For more
than 100 persons, the cost is at P100 per head.
Represent the total cost as a piecewise function
of the number of attendees of the party.
Group Activity
Brainstorm with your group. Represent the
real-life situation into piecewise function.
Group 2.
The fee to park in the parking lot of a shopping
mall costs P40.00 for the first two hours and an
extra P10.00 for each hour (or a fraction of it)
after that. If you park for more than twelve
hours, you instead pay a flat rate of P200.00.
Represent your parking fee using the function
p(t) where t is the number of hours you parked
in the mall.
Group Activity

Brainstorm with your group. Represent the

real-life situation into piecewise function.
Group 3.
A certain chocolate bar costs P35.00 per piece.
However, if you buy more than 10 pieces, they
will be marked down to a price of P32.00 per
piece. Use a piecewise function to represent the
cost in terms of the number of chocolate bars
bought.
Group Activity
Brainstorm with your group. Represent the real-life
situation into piecewise function.
Group 4.
A user is charged P300 monthly for a
particular mobile plan, which includes 100
free text messages. Messages in excess of
100 are charged P1 each. Represent the
amount a consumer pays each month as a
function of the number of messages m sent
in a month.
