Long vowels

• Long vowels are vowel sounds that are pronounced the same way as the name of
the letter in the alphabet. Unlike short vowels, which are quick and relaxed, long
vowels are held for a slightly longer duration.
• i: (example words: 'beat', 'mean, peace)
• 3: (example words: 'bird', 'fern', 'purse’)
• a: (example words: 'card', 'half', 'pass’)
• 0: (example words: 'board', 'torn', 'horse
• u: (example words: 'food', 'soon', 'loose')
Short and long vowels

• A pure vowel is a vowel sound that stays the same from the beginning to the end.
It doesn’t change into another sound while you say it. Think of it as one steady
vowel sound.
• For example:
• When you say "cat" – the /æ/ sound stays the same all the way through.
• When you say "sit" – the /ɪ/ sound doesn't change.

• Diphthongs
el

• A diphthong is a vowel sound that begins with one vowel and smoothly moves
(or glides) into another vowel within the same syllable. It's like blending two
vowel sounds into one. The word "diphthong" comes from Greek:
• "di" = two
• "phthong" = sound or tone
• Note: First part is longer & stronger.
• Note: The last part must not be to strongly.
•· /eɪ/ – as in day, say
•· /aɪ/ – as in buy, eye
•· /ɔɪ/ – as in boy, toy
•· /aʊ/ – as in now, cow
•· /əʊ/ – as in go, no
•· /ɪə/ – as in ear, clear
•· /eə/ – as in air, care)
Easiest why to remember diphthongs
triphthong
complex vowel sound that begins with one vowel, glides to another vowel, and then moves to a third vowel within the same
syllable. Essentially, it's a combination of three vowel sounds that are pronounced in a single syllable, creating a smooth
transition between them.

1. /aɪə/ Starts with /aɪ/ (as in "buy") and glides into /ə/.
Fire /faɪə/ Tire /taɪə/

2. /aʊə/ Starts with /aʊ/ (as in "now") and glides into /ə/.
Hour /aʊə/ Power /paʊə/ Flower /flaʊə/

3. /eɪə/ Starts with /eɪ/ (as in "say") and glides into /ə/

Layer /leɪə/ Player /pleɪə/ Prayer /preɪə/

4. /əʊə/ (Starts with /əʊ/ (as in "go") and glides into /ə/.
 Lower /ləʊə/ Mower /məʊə/ Shower /ʃəʊə/
5. /ɔɪə/ Starts with /ɔɪ/ (as in "boy") and glides into /ə/.
Royal /rɔɪəl/ Loyal /ɔɪə/ Enjoyable /ɪnˈdʒɔɪəbl/
Characteristics of Triphthongs:

• Structure: Triphthongs consist of three vowel sounds.

• Syllable: They occur within a single syllable, unlike separate vowels that might
form different syllables.
• Glide: The movement from the first vowel to the last is fluid and quick, similar to
diphthongs
The beautiful thing about learning is
that no one can take it away from
you.
