Long Vowel
Long Vowel
• Long vowels are vowel sounds that are pronounced the same way as the name of
the letter in the alphabet. Unlike short vowels, which are quick and relaxed, long
vowels are held for a slightly longer duration.
• i: (example words: 'beat', 'mean, peace)
• 3: (example words: 'bird', 'fern', 'purse’)
• a: (example words: 'card', 'half', 'pass’)
• 0: (example words: 'board', 'torn', 'horse
• u: (example words: 'food', 'soon', 'loose')
Short and long vowels
• A pure vowel is a vowel sound that stays the same from the beginning to the end.
It doesn’t change into another sound while you say it. Think of it as one steady
vowel sound.
• For example:
• When you say "cat" – the /æ/ sound stays the same all the way through.
• When you say "sit" – the /ɪ/ sound doesn't change.

el
• A diphthong is a vowel sound that begins with one vowel and smoothly moves
(or glides) into another vowel within the same syllable. It's like blending two
vowel sounds into one. The word "diphthong" comes from Greek:
• "di" = two
• "phthong" = sound or tone
• Note: First part is longer & stronger.
• Note: The last part must not be to strongly.
