intro to primary

memory
BY: ZOHA, FATIMA AND HAFSA
WHAT IS PRIMARY MEMORY?
Primary memory, also called main
memory, is the part of a computer
where data and programs currently in
use are stored for quick access by the
CPU. It ensures the system can
process data efficiently and in
real-time. The two important types of
primary memory are RAM and ROM.
RAM ( Random access memory ) :

This is a type of volatile memory,

meaning that its contents are lost
when the computer is powered off. It
stores data and instructions that the
CPU needs for immediate use, allowing
for faster access compared to other
types of storage like hard drives or
SSDs.
Types Of RAM :
• SRAM (Static • DRAM (Dynamic
RAM)data as
• Retains RAM)
• Needs to be refreshed
long as power is thousands of times per
supplied, without second to retain data.

DRAM.
• Used for cache
memory in CPUs.
ROM (Read Only Memory) :
• ROM is a type of non-volatile
memory, meaning it retains its
contents even when the power is
turned off. It stores firmware or
essential instructions required to
start up the computer, such as the
BIOS (Basic Input/ Output System).
Types Of ROM :
• PROM (Programmable ROM)
• Can be programmed once by the user but cannot be changed afterward.
• EPROM (Erasable Programmable ROM)
• Can be erased and reprogrammed by exposing it to ultraviolet (UV) light.
• EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM)
• Can be erased and reprogrammed electronically, making it more flexible.
• Used in systems like BIOS updates and embedded systems.

CONCLUSION :)
Primary memory is crucial
for a computer's
functionality, with RAM
providing the speed
needed for active
processes and ROM
ensuring the system can
boot and run foundational
instructions.
Understanding both types
is essential for grasping
how computers operate
