WRITING, REVISING AND EDITING


WRITING
1. Writing: Write your first Draft, paying close attention to
your outline or list.
WRITING AND REVISING
Coherence: Are the ideas clearly related, each one to the
others and to the central idea.
Is there clean pattern of organization (time, space or
emphasis)
Is the pattern supported by words that suggest the basis of
what organization (time: now, then , later; space: above,
below, up, down; emphasis: first, second, last)?
Is coherence enhanced by the use of transitional terms,
pronouns, repetition, and a consistent point of view?
COMMON TRANSITIONS
Addition Signals: One, first of all, second, the third reason,
also, next, and, in addition, moreover, furthermore, finally, last
of all
Time signals: first, then, after, as, before, while, meanwhile,
soon, now, during, finally
Space signals: next to, across, on the opposite side, to the left,
to the right, above, below, near, nearby
Change in direction signals: but, however, yet, in contrast,
although, otherwise, still, on the contrary, on the other hand
Illustration signals: for example, for instance, specifically, as
an illustration, once such as
Conclusion signals: therefore, consequently, thus, as a result,
in summary, to conclude, last of all, finally

Language:
Is the word choice effective? Do the words convey precise
meaning? Are they fresh and original?

Unity:
Are the thesis and every topic sentence clear and well
stated? Do they indicate both subject and focus? Are all
points of support clearly related to and subordinate to the
topic sentence of each paragraph and to the thesis of the
essay?
WRITING AND REVISING
Emphasis: Are ideas properly placed especially near the
beginning and end for emphasis?
What kinds of sentences have been used? Simple,
compound, complex, compound complex.
Simple: She did the work well.
Compound: She did the work well and she was well paid.
Complex: Because she did the work well, she was well paid.
Compound-complex: Because she did the work well, she was
well paid and she was satisfied.
Are the sentences varied in length and beginnings?
WRITING AND REVISING
Support: Is there adequate material such as examples,
details, quotations and explanations to support each topic
sentence and the thesis?
Are the points of support placed in the best possible order?
Editing: Are all problems in areas as capitalization, grammar,
punctuation and spellings corrected?
