Introduction
THE VALUES OF OBSERVING CHILDREN:
• "To appreciate and learn about children’s growth,
development, temperament and
interests" (Abbas, 2024, slide 24).
• "To inform curriculum and environmental design and make
adaptations where necessary" (Abbas, 2024, slide 24).
• "To observe the safety and well-being (social, emotional, and
physical) of each child in the group" (Abbas, 2024, slide 25).
• "without observing, you are neglecting." -Lauryn and Marina
(2024)
• "it is a foundational and cyclical process that involves
watching, listening, and documenting children's learning and
behaviour, as well as many other elements about children
and the environment" (Fenning & Wylie, 2021, p. 3).

What type of tool?
◦ A participation chart is a closed method observation
methodology.
◦ It is a targeted tool as it focuses on recording pre-
selected behaviours, social dynamics or other items
observed during a child’s participation at various learning
centres or zones.

Purpose of the tool:

◦ To record the participation and skills of one or more
children in the group as they engage in a particular
curriculum zone or in all available areas in the playroom
or classroom.
◦ A participation chart enables the observer to collect
information on a number of items.
(Fenning & Wylie, 2020)
(Danilyuk, 2021)
Observational Tool:
Participation Charts
Any preparations required for the tool?
◦ Preparation and reflection is needed when creating
the chart
◦ The observer must first define the purpose for
observation and ensure that it is clearly
understood by any observer completing the chart.

(Fenning & Wylie, 2020)

(Dummer,2019
Observational Tool:
Participation Charts
What information does the tool seek?

◦ Helps with understanding how to engage and support
the learner.

How is the information used?

◦ Educational and managerial decisions can be made.
◦ Helps in understanding how the child thinks, acts or
learns.

◦ Helps the educator in planning different learning
experiences.
(Fenning & Wylie, 2021)
(Nilov, 2021)
Observational Tool:
Participation
Charts
Advantages
◦ Encourages active participation.
◦ Active participation refers to children
involved in the decision-making process
("What is active Participation in Social Care, 2024")
◦ Offers precise, brief descriptions that are
easily recorded
Disadvantages
◦ Can reduce a child’s self-esteem.
◦ Does not provide a holistic overview of the
child.
(Fenning & Wylie, 2020)

outdoors in the playground and making
comments when the child is playing.

(Shuraeva,
