INTRODUCTION
What is an Operating System?
An operating system is software that manages computer hardware and
software resources and provides common services for computer programs.
It is also known to be a program that acts as an interface between the user
and the computer hardware and controls the execution of all kinds of
programs. The operating system is an essential components of the system
software in a computer system. Application programs usually require an
operating system to function.
In the simple language it can be said that an OS is a piece of software that
s needed to run the programs on a computer or a mobile device. The
programs that run on an operating system talk to.
FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEM
An operating system has its functions of which few will be mentioned below:
• Memory Management: an OS keeps tracks of primary memory, i.e., what part
of it are in use, by whim, what part are not in use. It allocates the memory when a
process request it to do so and otherwise.
• Processor Management: an OS keeps tracks of process and status of process,
allocates the processor (CPU) to a process and de-allocate when the process is
no longer required.
• Security: throughout password and some other techniques, it prevents
unauthorized access to programs.
• Device Management: it manages device communication via their respective
drivers, decides which process gets the device, when, and how much rime.
• File Management: keeps tracks of information, location, uses, status, etc.
TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM
The following are common examples of Operating system of which this discussion is based on
Mac OS
Windows OS
Linux OS
MAC OS
• SECURITY: Mac OS is a two layered system the attractive GUI sits atop a Unix
core, and Unix is the best-known for its security features. Its simply impossible to
install a destructive Trojan or virus unless the user explicitly allows it root access
via typing in the admin password. Mac OS’s built in firewall is set up to work
unobtrusively out of the box as well as being highly configurable.
• RELIABILITY: because OS X means (MAC OS) was designed from scratch from
the ground up, Mac OS is incredibly stable. Apple controls production from start to
finish, so every part of Mac is designed and tested to work together.
FEATURES OF MAC OS (CONT’D)
• Ease of use: Apple is known for hiring the best industrial and
interface designers around, it shows in the intuitive nature of
the GUI. It is designed to just work. Advanced users have use
command line access with the terminal app.
• Integration with apple and other products: it will
automatically recognizes and work with any other Apple
products such as iPhone, Cinema Display, Airport, and iPad.
WINDOWS OS
This is the most used operating system among others. Microsoft Windows operating
system was developed by Microsoft to overcome the limitation of its own MS-DOS
operating system. First successful version were Windows 3.0 in 1990. Subsequently
released version were Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP
Professional, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and nowadays
Microsoft launches its latest Windows 10.
FEATURES OF WINDOWS OS
• Plug and play: windows gives plug and play option to its user. There is no
need to install driver of any external peripheral devices like “web camera’s,
joysticks data traveler devices.”
• Windows is a MS-DOS based operating system.
LINUX OS
Linux was originally built by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in 1991.
Linux is a Unix-like, kernel-based, fully memory-protected, multitasking operating
system.
FEATURES OF LINUX OS
• Open source operating system: Linux is an open source operating system. Any
programmer can modify it due to its needs.
• Free software: Linux is a free software anyone can download it from the web and
install it on its pc.
• Many pc user can install Linux to its system there is no specific requirements for
installing it.
FEATURES OF LINUX OS (CONT’D)
• Portable: Linux can work on different types of hardware in the same way.
• Linux provides special interpreter program which can be used to execute
commands of the OS, it can be used to perform various types of operation.
• Security: Linux uses authentication features like password, for
protection/encryption of data / access control to specified files.
COMPARISON OF FEATURES
There is no virus in Mac There are many types There are lesser
OS because it can only of viruses in Windows amount of viruses
be installed only on OS because of a large compared to Windows
Apple devices amount of market share because Linux is an
open source OS
Apple devices are too Windows is less Linux software is total
much expensive expensive than Mac free.
