denotation?
Denotation is the objective meaning of
a word. The term comes from the Latin
word “denotation,” meaning
“indication.” The denotation of a word
is its literal definition—its dictionary
definition—and contains no emotion..
B/ What is an example of a
denotation?
It is the essential on core meaning

Ex: boy = + human + male + adult


Denotative meaning deals with the core
meaning of an expression. It is the
denotative or literal meaning. It is essential
for the functioning of language
.
Ex: a part of the denotative meaning of
‘Needle’ may be ‘thin’, ‘sharp’ or
‘instrument

The aim of denotative meaning is to provide
an appropriate semantic representation to a
sentence or statement

Connotation: Intelligent or cheerful.

Cool
Denotation: Moderately cold; not warm.
"The weather is cool"
Connotation: Fashionable or admirable.
"You are wearing a really cool jacket"
