Operation
on Sets
Targets:
▪ Define and describe the union, intersection, and
complement of a set.

▪ Identify the importance of using Venn Diagrams in real

life situation

▪ Use Venn diagram to represent sets, subsets, and set

operation

▪ Solve problems involving sets.

Kinds of Sets

Equal Sets is when the two Equivalent Sets is when

sets have the same and the two sets have the
equal elements same number of elements

Example: Example:
A = { 1, 2, 3} A = { 1, 2, 3}
B = {3, 2, 1} B = {a, b, c}
A=B A <-> B
Try this!
Determine whether the sets are Equal sets or Equivalent sets.
Write the symbols in the space provided in each number.

1. A = {d, e, f} ______ B = { f, e, d}

2. C = { 1, 2, 3} ______ D = { 4, 5, 6}

3. E = { heart, square, Circle} ______ F = {circle, heart,

square}
Kinds of Sets

Subset is a set of which all Proper Subset is a subset

the elements are that doesn’t include all
contained in another set elements of the set which
it belongs
Example:
A = {A, B, C} Example:
B = {A, B} A = {A, B, C}
C = {B, C} B = {A, B, C, D}
B⊆A A⊂B
C⊆A
Try this!

Tell whether the statement is true or false.

A = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5} B = { 2, 3, 4} C = { 1, 2,
3, 4, 5, 6}

1. A is a subset of B
2. B is a subset of C
3. A is a subset of C
4. C is a proper subset of A
Try this!
#2
Fill in each blank with ∈ , U , Π or

U
1. 4 _____ {2,3,4,5}

2. {2} _____ {3} = {2,3}

3. {1, 2} ______ {1, 2, 3}

4. {a,b,c} _____ {d,e} = { }

Universal Sets

Universal Sets is a set which has

elements of all the related sets
Complement
of a Set

The complement of a set

A, written A’, is the set of
elements in the universal
set that are not in A.
Example
s:
Find the complement of each set.

U = {1,2,3,5,8,10}

1. B = {1,2,3}

2. C = {1,3,5,8,10}
Try this!
#3
Find the complement of the given set for
U = {0,2,4,6,8,10}

1. D = {0}

2. E = {2,4,8}
Examples:
Find the complement of each set. Use venn diagram to
answer
U = {1,2,3,5,8,10}

1. B = {1,2,3}

2. C = {1,3,5,8}
Example:
In a class of 50 students, each of the students passed either
in mathematics or in science or in both. 10 students passed
in both and 28 passed in science. Find how many students
passed in mathematics?
Example:
In a college, 200 students are randomly selected. 140
like tea, 120 like coffee and 80 like both tea and coffee.

How many students like only tea?

How many students like only coffee?
How many students like neither
tea nor coffee?
How many students like only one of
tea or coffee?
How many students like at least one of the beverages?
Example:
A researcher survey 45 students about the instrument they
can play. The venn diagram shows the results.
Let G = {students who can play guitar}
V = {students who can play violin} and
D = {students who can play drums}
How many students can play :
a. Guitar
b. Violin
c. Drums
d. Violin and drums
e. Drums or guitar
f. All three
g. Neither one of the three
Example:
Fifty people are asked about the pets they
keep at home. The venn diagram shows the
results.
Let
D = {people who have dogs}
F = {people who have fish} and
C = {people who have cats}
How many people have:
a. Dog b. Dogs and fish
c. Dogs or cats d. fish and cats but no dogs
e. Dogs or fish but no cats
f. All three
Reflectio
n
Do you agree that complement is the same as friendship? If yes, Why? If not,
why?

How do you relate complement into your life?

What is the importance of complement to your life?
