Charan's Seminar Presentation Introduction to the Dark Web The Dark Web is a part of the internet not indexed by search engines. Hidden under the Deep Web layer. Accessed via specific browsers like TOR. Layers of the web Surface Web: Accessible via traditional browsers (e.g., Google, YouTube). Deep Web: Requires special access, not indexed by search engines. Dark Web: The hidden part, often associated with anonymity. Layers of the web Surface Web:(Visible Web or Indexed Web) The part of the internet that is easily accessible to the public and indexed by standard search engines like Google, Bing, etc. Only a small portion of the internet (4-5%). Anyone with an internet connection can access it without special tools or permissions. Layers of the web • Deep Web: The part of the internet that is not indexed by search engines and requires specific access methods (e.g., login credentials or direct URLs). • This part of the web is much larger than the surface web and includes a wide variety of content that requires some form of authentication, a direct URL, or special access permissions. Layers of the web Dark Web: A subset of the deep web that requires special software, like Tor browser. It’s often used for illegal activities like selling drugs or stolen data, but some people use it for private, legal reasons, like political activism. You need special software (like Tor) to visit these sites, and people use it to browse anonymously. Layers of the web Tor(The Onion Routing Project) Tor is a free, open-source software that allows people to browse the internet anonymously It’s designed to protect users' privacy by hiding their identity and location while they access websites. It hides your identity and location by sending your internet traffic through different computers (called nodes) around the world, making it very hard to track where you're coming from. The Evolution of the Dark Web: From Defense to Diverse Uses Dark web was initially developed by the U.S. Department of Defense to enable secure and anonymous communication, primarily to protect sensitive military and intelligence information. People use the dark web for both legal and illegal purposes. It uses a technology called "onion routing“. The Dark Side of the Dark Web Buying and selling illegal drugs. Trading guns and other weapons. Selling fake money, IDs, and passports. Buying and selling stolen credit card details and personal info. Hiring hackers to steal data or disrupt systems. Distribution of stolen or illegal software and digital content. The Dark Side of the Dark Web Red rooms are rumored sites on the dark web where people supposedly pay to watch live streams of violence or torture. . Online gambling platforms that operate outside the law and can be associated with fraud. Various types of scams, including phishing and fake investment opportunities. Creating and selling forged identification documents tailored to specific needs. THANK YOU!
