Counseling Process
A number of factors affect counseling process for better or worse.
Those covered here, are-
 The seriousness of the concerned presented.
 Structure
 Physical Setting
 Client Qualities
 Counselor Qualities

The seriousness of the concerned presented


 Counseling is impacted by the seriousness of clients presenting
problem
 Evidence has suggested a relationship between the initial self-
reported disturbance level and the treatment course.
Clients who come to counseling with unfinished
business (unexpressed fleeing's- hate, pain, hurt,
anxiety, guilt and grief and event and memories)- take
longer to treat than clients who have just experienced
a difficulty.
A research submitted by Leibert (2006), has found
50% of clients diagnosed with anxiety or depression
had improved by sessions 8-13 and 85% of clients
improved after 1 year.
Structure
 Clients often do not know what to expect from the process or how
to act.
 Many clients enter counseling reluctantly and hesitantly
 This uncertainty can inhibit the counseling process unless some
structure is provided ( Ritche,1986).
Structure in counseling defined as a joint understanding
between the counselor and clients regarding the characteristics,
conditions, procedures and parameters of counseling.

Structures helps-
 Clarify the client-counselor relationship
 Give directions to protect rights, roles and obligations of both
counselor and clients
 Ensure the success of counseling
Practical Guidelines are part of building structures. They include-
I. Time limits
II. Action limits
III. Role limits (What will be expected of each participant)
IV. Procedural limits

Structure is provided throughout all stages of counseling but is


especially important at the beginning.
Initiative
It can be thought of as the motivation to change.
Most counselor and counseling theories assume that clients
will be co-operative.
Many clients comes to counseling willingly and they work
hard in counseling sessions.
Other clients are more reserved about participating in
counseling.
A role-reversal exercise can promote counselor empathy and is
an excellent technique to use at such times.

A resistant client is a person in counseling who is unwilling,


unready or opposed to change.
Four broad categories of resistance-
1. Amount of verbalization
2. Content of message
3. Style of communication
4. Attitude towards counselor and counseling session

Counselor can helps clients achieving success in counseling-


5. Anticipating
6. Deal with acceptance, patience and understanding as well as
non-judgmental attitude
7. Use persuasion
Physical Setting
Among the most important factors that help or hurt the process is the place
where the counseling occurs.
The room should be comfortable and attractive. Including- soft lightening,
quiet colors, an absence of clutter, harmonious, comfortable furniture, etc.

Eight common characteristics of space and their potential impact on their


counseling-
1. Accessories
2. Color
3. Furniture and room design
4. Lightening
5. Smell
6. Sound
7. Texture (surface or substance)
8. Thermal conditions

Physical attractive are perceived as
healthiest and are responded to more
positively than others
Non-verbal behavior
Facial expression
Counselor Qualities

Attractiveness
Trustworthiness
