Force
Effects of force
• Effects of force
• It can make a stationary object move. Example: pushing a box at rest
on the table brings the box in motion.
• It can stop a moving object. ...
• It can change the speed of a moving object. ...
• It can change the direction of a moving object. ...
• It can change the shape or size of an object.
Types of forces
• Gravitational force or gravity is the force that attracts objects to the
centre of the Earth. If you throw a ball up, it comes down after some
time because of gravity. It is the Earths gravity that keeps us and all
other objects, on the ground.
Types of forces
• Magnetic force or magnetism- Is the force with which a magnet
attracts metals such as iron and nickel, and other magnets. Magnets
may also repel each other with the help of a magnetic force.
Types of forces
• Electrostatic force- The electrostatic force is the force that exists
between electrically charged particles or objects at rest.
Types of forces
A mechanical force is defined as a force that involves direct physical
contact or interactions between two things and results in a change in
the configuration of objects.
Types of forces
• Buoyant force
Archimedes' principle
• Archimedes' principle states that any object immersed in a fluid is
acted upon by an upward, or buoyant, force equal to the weight of
the fluid displaced by the object.
Frictional force
• Frictional force or friction is the force that tries to stop the
movement of objects across a surface. Friction always acts in the
direction of movement of an object. It can slow down the movement
of an object or stop it from moving altogether. In general, movement
across smooth surfaces such as ice and glass produces less friction.
Advantages of friction
• Advantages of friction:
• Friction enables us to walk freely.
• It helps to support ladder against wall.
• It becomes possible to transfer one form of energy to another.
• Objects can be piled up without slipping.
• Breaks of vehicles work due to friction.
Disadvantages of friction
• Disadvantages of friction:
• Friction produces heat which damages the moving parts of a machine.
• Friction produces wear and tear on the contacting surfaces. This
reduces the life of machine parts, tyres and shoe soles.
• A lot of energy is wasted due to friction to overcome it before moving.
Energy
• The ability to do work is called energy.
• There are many forms of energy.
Different forms of energy
• Heat energy
• Light energy
• Mechanical energy
• Electrical energy
• Wing energy
• Sound energy
• Solar energy
• Geo thermal energy
