The light Microscope

Important terms
• A Microscope is an instrument used to see
objects that are too small for the naked eye.
• The science of investigating small objects using
such an instrument is called Microscopy.
• Microscopic means invisible to the eye unless
aided by a microscope.
PARTS AND FUNCTIONS OF A
COMPOUND MICROSCOPE
LIGHT
MICROSCOPE
Simple light microscope
• A magnifying lens is an
example of a simple
light microscope
Compound microscope
• Eye piece and objective
lenses in a compound
microscope together
increase the
magnification power of
the microscope
A uniocular compound microscope
Parts and functions
1. Eyepiece / Ocular Lens • Magnifies the specimen image • It is where you look
through to view the object placed on the stage. It may be a uniocular or
binocular
2. Body Tube • It supports the eyepiece and lenses. • It also maintains the proper
distance between the eyepiece and the objective lenses.
3. Nose Piece • It holds the objective lenses and can be turned to increase the
magnification.
4. Objective Lenses • It is used to magnify the images of the specimen to form an
enlarged image.
5. Stage Clips • These 2 clips hold the slide/specimen in place on the stage.
6. Diaphragm • It controls the amount of light on the slide/specimen Turn to let
more light in or to make dimmer.
7. Mirror or light source • It reflects light to the lens of the microscope.
8. Arm • It is the frame to which the base, body and stage are attached.
9. Stage • Supports the slide/specimen
10.Coarse Adjustment Knob • Moves the stage up and down LARGER focusing of
the image.
11.Fine Adjustment Knob • This knob moves the stage slightly to sharpen the
image for PRECISION focusing.
12.Base • Supports the microscope and is also used for carrying the microscope.

Objective lenses

Most microscopes have four objective lenses that give x4,

x10, x40 and x100 magnification
Stage and Diaphragm
Stage clips and mirror
Base and arm/neck
Coarse and fine adjustment knobs
Magnification
• To determine magnification of a microscope
we just multiply the magnification power of
ocular lens with the power of objective lens
• For example if ocular lens is x10 and objective
lens is x40, then total magnification will be
10x40= 400
so the object will be x400 bigger then its actual
size
Microscope lenses
Type Power name
Ocular lens x10 eye piece
Objective lens x4 Scanning lens
x10 Low power
x40 High power
x100 Oil emersion lens
Using a Microscope
• Start on the lowest magnification
• Don’t use the coarse adjustment
knob on high magnification … you’ll
break the slide.
• Place slide on stage and lock clips
• Adjust light source/ mirror.
• Use fine adjustment to focus
