ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I am grateful to K.E.T’s V.G.Vaze College and my
Environment Education Teacher Mrs. Veena Puthran Madam for
providing and guiding me in the project topic-”A study on air
pollution in your area using the AQI app”.

I am also thankful to my parents and friends for their

continuous corporation and support in the completion of the
project.

INTRODUCTION
What is AQI?
The air quality index (AQI) is an index for reporting air quality on a
within a short time period. The purpose of the AQI is to help people know
how the local air impacts their health. The Environmental protection Agency
(EPA) Calculates the AQI for five major daily basis. It is a measure of how air
pollution affects one’s health or air pollutants, for which national air quality
standards have been established to safeguard public health.
(1) Ground-level Ozone, (2) particular matter (Pm5/Pm10)
(3) Carbon monoxide, (4) Sulphur dioxide, (5) Nitrogen dioxide
I have selected this topic because the air quality index is an excellent
method to make people aware of the risks that arise due to the pollution
they have caused. People need to realize this i.e. why the government has
put real-time air quality index calculating stands on important signals so that
people notice it.

4
IMPORTANCE
Effective and obvious communication of air quality is important. Along with
indexing the air quality, AQI also provides advice on how one can improve the
quality of the air one inhales. This index particularly considers the people sensitive
towards air pollution and advices them ways to protect themselves from different
health risks passed at various air quality levels.
It is very crucial for those who spend most of their time working or exercising
outside as they are prone to higher exposure and may have difficulty in breathing
when air pollution levels are severe.
AQI is all the more important in developing nations like India where the
common man is not quite familiar with the technical terminologies and measuring
units (like ppm/ppb/or mg/mg3). Hence the AQI simplifies the understanding of
their air quality by decoding the quality in terms of unitless numbers and color, with
each figure and color representing a different category of associated health risks.

5
Air quality index is significant in 21st century when pollution
levels are so high in some places of India that they had to were
masks even before COVID-19 so that their lungs inhale better air.
Socially an individual needs to realize that how clean the air
around him or her is. People with lung diseases and newborn
babies are most affected by unclean air. If one knows how risky it
is he’ll try to reduce pollution on an individual level and if even
30% of people realize this and try to do their bit it can help a lot.
Environmentally air quality must be good or moderate
because it entails that the pollutants are present in low amounts
and do not contribute excess to global warming.

6
OBJECTIVES
• To analyse how air quality index is changing
every week for a month.
• To understand the scale on which India
calculates the air quality index.
• To know the oxides of sulphur and Nitrogen
present in the air.
• To know the level of Ozone present in the air.
• To know the level of PM2.5 and PM10 present
in the air.
7
METHODOLOGY
We all know that due to the spread of covid-19, a Nationwide lockdown was
enforced in India by the Government of India. So, during lockdown to know the
changes happened due to this lockdown in quality of air, I decides to take this as a
topic for my E.V.E Project, Due to lockdown there was minimum use of vehicles
which helped to reduce the air pollution.
So, firstly I asked our E.V.E mam about how to perform the project . She
suggest me to download the AQI app which shows live level of air pollution &
quality of air, for which she told me to download the AQI app and take reading for
one month once in a week at the same time as done on first day of reading. Also
she explain the procedures of doing the project, So, As instructed by her I
download the AQI app on my mobile and I decide to take reading every Monday
at 6pm for 1 month i.e, from 18th January 2021 to 15th February 2021.
Also for researching, I used the following sites and applications:
website: 1) www.oneindia.com 3) Plume app
2) www.mpcb.gov.in 4) AQI app
8
On every Monday I used to take screenshots of the
readings which used to be displayed on the screen and in
order to check whether the readings are correct or not I used
to crosscheck the readings.
So the reading which I got from AQI app after 1 month
was written in the observation, The observation was written in
the Tabular form. Then I found i,e. calculates the mean,
median & mode of the observations I recorded & wrote it in
Analysis Along with it I also represented the mean of the
recording in the forms of the pie diagram to make it easy to
understand. Then the conclusion was written by me and the
project was completed.

OBSERVATION
How is the AQI calculated?
The AQI is calculated by physically measuring pollutant
concentrations of a particular pollutant over a standard time
interval. For most pollutants, it is 24 hours but 8 hours for
ozone and carbon monoxide.
So after measuring concentrations of all eight pollutants
that are considered the final AQI is equal to the highest of
the AQI values calculated separately for each pollutant.
Example: Suppose if individual pollutant index for PM 2.5 is
80, nitrogen dioxide is 35 and carbon monoxide is 50 the
value of AQI will be 80.

ANALYSIS
The AQI in my area 1 month I recorded
from Air. As per data, I collected and what the
graph has shown the air quality in my region has
been good satisfactory according to the AQI we
follow. Category

This is standardly used by
India to highlight the AQI into
categories considering the
national air quality standards.

Category AQI
Good 0-50
Satisfactory 51-100
Moderate 101-200

Based on the Observation records by the AQI app. The
Mean, Median, and Mode of the pollutants and AQI are
as follows :

CONCLUSION
Based on the observations we get we can calculate that we came to
know the Air Quality Index (AQI). On Vartak nagar naka, Thane (w). And can
calculate that the Air Quality Index was between the range of 14-22(us) which
is considered very good in urban area which are densely populated like Thane.
In these observations, we came to know that the concentration of
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was the most, followed by Sulphur dioxide (SO2), after
that ozone concentration was the greatest and next to that was PM10 &
PM2.5, respectively. So the air quality of Vartak nagar, Thane (w) was good
for all age group people. Literally the air quality was favourable to go for a
walk, cycling, etc. from 18th January 2021 to 15th February 2021.
We all also come to know about how important the determination of Air
Quality Index (AQI) is for us to check the quality of air we breathe, whether
the air is good for everyone to keep them away from respiratory diseases.
