BREAST

FEEDING
• Breast feeding is the feeding a

neonate/infant with breast milk direct

from female breast .Not from baby

bottle or any other container.

• It is the normal way the normal way of

providing young infant with nutrients

they need for healthy growth and

development.
TYPES OF BREAST MILK

1 COLOSTRUM MILK:

• It secret for the first 2-3 days


• It is thick yellow and small quantity
• Contain protein and immunoglobulin in
excess amount.

2 TRANSITIONAL MILK:

• It is secret 2 week of delivery.


• Contain fat and carbohydrate
3 MATURE MILK:

• It is secret after 2 weeks of delivery.


• It contains the balanced concentration of all
Hind milk component.

Fore milk
4 FORE MILK:
• It is fulfills the thirst need contains water in more
amount.

5 HIND MILK:

• It is fulfills the hunger needs.


• It contains carbohydrate and fat in large amount
•Breast feeding must be started within 1 hour
of the baby’s birth.

•Dedicated staff of the hospital should


promote and create awareness about the
importance of early breast feeding.

•Cesarean mother also start early breast


feeding.

•Exclusive breastfeeding must continue for 6


months.

• Breast milk content all nutrition in the right

• Fulfill the calories requirement of the infant

2 PROTECTIVE VALUE:

• Breast milk provide IgA, IgM, Antibodies.


• Breast milk prevention of infection in the
newborn.

• Breast milk is easily to digestible


• Protect against infections
• Perfect nutrients

4 PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFIT:

• It promote emotional bonding between mother


and newborn.

BREASTFEEDING PREVENTS EARLY MALNUTRITION
(UNDER-NUTRITION AND OBESITY)

Faulty feeding practices leading to malnutrition


• Late initiation of breastfeeding

• Providing prelacteal feeds

• Not giving exclusive breastfeeding till 6/12 months.

• Late introduction of complementary feeding

• Over feeding with artificial feeds leads to obesity


CONTRAINDICATION TO BREASTFEEDING

• HIV, HLTV 1 & 11 infections. (Adult T-cell lymphoma

virus)
• Active Tuberculosis.
• Herpes lesions on mother's breast.
• Infant with Inborn error of metabolism; galactosemia,

phenylketonuria.
• Mothers on certain medications; anticancer therapy,

radioactive isotope etc.


TECHNIQUE OF BREAST FEEDING
OTHER OPTIONS IF BREASTFEEDING
IS NOT POSSIBLE
Mom can still use her milk, even if she decides not to
breastfeed:
• Use a breast pump (electric/manual)
• Cup or bowl feeding

• Spoon feeding

• Eyedropper or feeding syringe

• Nursing supplementer

• Get milk from donation bank
