CHAPTER 1 MATTER

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS

The mass in an isolated system
can neither be created nor be
destroyed but can be
transformed from one form to
another.
STATEMENT :
Whenever a chemical
change takes place
# The total mass of
the reacting
substances is exactly
equal to – The total
mass of the products –
provided – masses are
measured under
LANDOLT`S EXPERIMENT
Reaction between Calcium chloride
and Sodium sulphate:
Mass of reactants = mass of products
EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE :

(1) A specially designed H-shaped tube is taken with its

one limb having Sodium chloride solution and the other
have AgNO3. This, in the first place was weighed after
sealing.

(2) The reaction was made to take place and then the
tube was weighed.

(3) The mass of the tube in both the case was found to be
the same. Thus redefining the Law of Conservation of
Mass.
Reaction between carbon and
Sulphur:
Carbon + Sulphur -----➜ Carbon DiSulphide
1g + 5. 34g = 6.34 g
LHS = RHS
LIMITATIONS OF THE LAW :
In all the chemical reactions, energy is
evolved or absorbed which would be at
the expense of change in mass. In
ordinary chemical reactions, this change
in mass is so small that it cannot be
registered on the most sensitive
balance. This suggests that some matter
of the reaction mixture gets converted
into energy such as light, heat etc. Thus
mass and energy are interconvertible
PLASMA STATE

Plasma is one of
the four fundamental states of matter.
 It consists of a gas of ions – atoms which
have some of their orbital electrons
removed – and free electrons.
