SPECIAL

RELATIVITY
Time Dilation and Length
Contraction
GEN PHYSICS 2 -
Ms. 12
Naela S.
Adtogan
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the
students should be able to:
• Define special relativity, time
dilation and length contraction
• Appreciate the significance of
Einstein’s theory of special
relativity in real-world applications
• Present thought experiments that
illustrate the concept of special
relativity
ACTIVITY
Choose a pair. You will watch a video about
Einstein's concept of the relativity of
simultaneity. Predict the outcomes of the scenes
in the video and discuss your initial thoughts on
the following questions:
1. What do you think will happen when
lightning strikes two different points on a
moving train?
2. What did you notice about the lightning
strikes from the perspective of the observer
on the train versus the observer on the
platform?
ANALYSIS
1.How do you think motion affects our
perception of events happening at the
same time?
2. How might the speed of the train affect the
observations of the lightning strikes?
3.
What is Special
• Relativity?
a theory by Albert Einstein that
explains how space and time work
for objects moving in a straight line
at constant speed, not
accelerating or influenced by
• it talks about two concepts: Time
gravity.
Dilation and Length Contraction
Group 1 - Time Dilation
Group 2 - Length
Contraction
What is Time
Dilation?
• Time moves
slower for
someone
traveling at high
speeds compared
to someone who is
What is Length
Contraction?
• An object
moving at high
speeds appears
shorter along the
direction of
motion compared
What are Real-World
Applications of Special
Relativity?
THOUGHT EXPERIMENT!
Design a thought experiment to
demonstrate your assigned concept. Your
group will continue to work together on the
same topics assigned earlier. You may use
the

Frayer’s model as a guide.
What is the scenario?
• Who are the observers, and what are their frames of
reference?
• What relativistic effects are being demonstrated?
QUIZ TIME!
ASSIGNMENT
Create an infographic highlighting the
real world application of special
relativity and present your findings in
our class next meeting.
Deadline: Next meeting
