Normal Distribution normal distribution Locate the area under the normal curve. Determine the probability of a given z score values under the normal curve.. What is a Normal Distribution? Normal Distribution is a probability distribution that is symmetric about the mean, showing that data near the mean are more frequent in occurrence than data far from the mean. In graph form, a normal distribution will appear as a bell curve. What are the features of a normal distribution in statistics? Features of a normal distribution - single peak . - it is a bell shape curve. - It is symmetrical around the mean, the mean lies at the center of the distribution. - its total area under the curve is 1 . thus the area of the curve in each side is 0.5 - tails of the curve can be extended indefinitely and asymptotic to the horizontal axis. - the probability between two given points is equal to the area under the curve between those points. How to standardize a given value? Formula: z = (x – μ) ÷σ where ; x - is the raw score μ - is the population mean σ – is the population standard deviation What are the uses of z – score? A z-score (or standard score) represents how many standard deviations a given measurement deviates from the mean. In other words it merely re-scales, or standardizes, your data. A z-score serves to specify the precise location of each observation (value or score ) within a distribution. Note: The sign of the z-score (+ or - ) indicates whether the score is above (+) or below ( - ) the mean value. A z-score is calculated by subtracting the mean value from the value of the observation, and dividing by the standard deviation. Commonly, a known reference sample or population mean and standard deviation are used. Finding Areas under the normal curve. ◦The probability between two given points in the distribution is equal to the area under the curve between those points. ◦To find the probabilities of any problem about normal curve or normal distribution, we use the table of z – score after converting the raw score to standard score. Normal Distribution Familiarization of using the z-score table in the finding the area under the normal curve. Example: Find the area under the normal curve of the following. Using z-table, sketch the graph of the following; 1. between z = 0 and z = 1.25 2. Between z = 0 and z = - 2.35 = 3. To the right of z = 1.45 4. To the left of z = - 1.34 5. Between z = - 1.25 and z = 2.35 6. Between z = 1.23 and z = 2.36 7. To left of z = 1.25 KEEP SAFE EVERYONE END
