Types of Sentences

in
English Language

1.Declarative / Assertive Sentences


2.Interrogative Sentences
3.Imperative Sentences
4.Exclamatory Sentences
1. Declarative / Assertive
Sentences
Generally, It is a simple type of sentence that is used to express
idea, fact, opinion or information . It is used with full stop and
divided into two types :-
i) Positive
ii) Negative

For Example :

Positive
Suraj is a good friend .

Negative
Pawan is not a bad student .
Opinion
i) I believe that winter is the best season .
ii) In my opinion, Offline education is better than online .

Fact
iii) “ The Earth revolves around the sun” .
iv) “ Water freezes at 0°C”.

Information
v) The college will close on Friday.
vi) Term exam will be started from next week.

Idea
vii)We could use electric automobiles .
viii)Practicing daily can improve our english language .
2. Interrogative Sentences
Basically, It is the type of sentence that is used to ask a
question and end with question mark . Type of
interrogative sentences are mentioned below .

Yes / No Question :
These types of question can be answered with “Yes” or
“No” . For example :

I) Are you coming ?


- Yes, I am .

II) Do you like ice-cream ?


- No, I don’t .
Wh- Question :
These start with wh-words like what, who, where, when,
whom, why and how . For examples :

I) Where are you going ?


II) What is your name ?
III)What are you doing ?
IV)How much does it cost ?

Tag Question :
A declarative or imperative statement turned into a question
by adding a tag. For example:

i) "You’re coming with us, aren’t you?“


ii) “It’s raining, isn’t it ?” .
3. Imperative
Sentence
It is the types of sentences that are use to give commands, request,
instructions, advice and warning . For Example :-

Commands :
i) Turn off the AC .
ii) Come here, now .

Requests :
i) “Please open the door .”
ii) “Could you help me please .”
Instructions :
i) Don’t write on the wall .
ii) Speed limit 80 kmph .

Warning :
i) Do not cross the road from here .
ii) Don’t climb the tree .

Advice :
i) Choose your friend wisely .
ii) Drink plenty of water to keep yourself
hydrated .
4. Exclamatory Sentence
It is a type of sentence that carry strong emotion or an
exclamation . Essentially, they are use to express the
feeling like joy, surprise, anger, admiration, e.t.c and
end with exclamation mark . For Examples :-

i) “What a beautiful painting !”


ii) “What a brilliant idea !”
iii)“Wow, that was incredible !”
iv)“Oh my goodness, it’s snowing !”
v) “How beautiful she looks !”

3. Complex Sentences
4. Compound Complex Sentences
1. Simple Sentences
It is the most basic form of sentences in english and
contains a single independent clause . Some of the
examples of simple sentences are mentioned below :-

Sub + verb
i) Birds fly .
ii) He sleeps.
Sub + verb + obj
i) She writes stories .
ii) They play football .

Sub + verb + Compliment


i) The weather is cold .
ii) The soup tastes amazing .

Sub + verb + Modifier


i) They run every morning .
ii) She dance beautifully in the program .
2. Compound Sentences
It is a types of sentences that has two independent
clause joining by semicolon, conjuction or adverbs .
For example :-

Clause 1 + semicolon + Clause 2

i) He arrived late; everyone had already left .


ii) I enjoy reading; my friend prefers writing .
Clause 1 + Conjuction + Clause 2

i) He wanted to stay, but he had to leave .


ii) He likes tea, and I like coffee .

Clause 1 + Adverb + Clause 2

i) She missed the bus; however, she managed to reach


on time.
ii) He prepared well for the presentation; therefore, he
was confident .
3. Complex Sentences
It is type of sentence that made up of a main clause and a
subordinate clause connected to each other with a subordinating
conjunction . For Example :-

Independent Clause + Conjunction + Dependent Clause


i) I will go to the park if I finish my homework .
ii) I stayed home because it was raining .

Dependent Clause + Conjunction + Independent Clause


i) Because it was raining, I stayed home .
ii) If you study hard, you will pass the exam .
4. Compound Complex
Sentences

Basically, It is a types of sentences that contain


at least two independent clause and one
dependent clause . It combines elements of both
compound and complex sentences . For
Example :-
Independent Clause + Coordinating Conjunction + Independent
Clause + Subordinating Conjunction + Dependent Clause

i) I wanted to buy a new car, but I couldn’t afford it because I lost


my job .
ii) We went to the park, and we had a picnic because the weather
was perfect.

Dependent Clause + Independent Clause + Coordinating


Conjunction + Independent Clause

i) Because she studied hard, she passed the exam, and she
celebrated with her friends.
ii) If you finish your homework, you can go outside, and we can
play game .
