Sentence and its types

Sentence:
A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It typically includes a subject and a
predicate (verb), and it begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark (period, question mark,
or exclamation mark).

1. Types of Sentences on the Basis of Structure

On the basis of structure, sentences can be classified into four types:

1.1 Simple Sentence

Definition: A simple sentence contains only one independent clause (a subject and a verb). It expresses a
complete thought.

Example:

She reads books.

The dog barked loudly.

1.2 Compound Sentence

Definition: A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating
conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) or a semicolon.

Example:

I wanted to go for a walk, but it started raining.

She loves pizza, and he enjoys pasta.

1.3 Complex Sentence

Definition: A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and at least one dependent (subordinate)
clause. The dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence.

Example:

Although it was raining, we went for a walk.

I will call you when I arrive at the airport.

1.4 Compound-Complex Sentence

Definition: A compound-complex sentence contains two or more independent clauses and at least one
dependent clause.
Example:

I wanted to go to the beach, but it was too cold, so we stayed home.

Although he was tired, he finished his homework, and he went to bed early.

2. Types of Sentences on the Basis of Function

On the basis of function, sentences can be classified into four types:

2.1 Declarative Sentence

Definition: A declarative sentence makes a statement and ends with a period. It provides information or
expresses a fact.

Example:

She is my best friend.

The Earth orbits the Sun.

2.2 Interrogative Sentence

Definition: An interrogative sentence asks a question and ends with a question mark. It seeks information or
clarification.

Example:

What time is it?

Are you coming to the party?

2.3 Imperative Sentence

Definition: An imperative sentence gives a command, request, or suggestion. It can end with a period or an
exclamation mark.

Example:

Please close the door.

Stop talking!

2.4 Exclamatory Sentence

Definition: An exclamatory sentence expresses strong emotion or excitement and ends with an exclamation
mark.
Example:

Wow! That’s amazing!

What a beautiful sunset!
