Nytrogen System

The document discusses the aircraft oxygen system, detailing its sources, effects on the body and pilots, and the types of oxygen systems available. It highlights the necessity of oxygen supply above 10,000 feet to prevent anoxia and ensure proper functioning. Additionally, it outlines the basic components of the system and emphasizes important safety precautions to avoid contamination and hazards.

AIRCRAFT

OXYGEN
SYSTEM
Lec Afsara Zahin Chowdhury
Aeronautical Engineering Dept.
MIST.
Oxygen Source
• The oxygen source is a charged oxygen bottle.
• Alternative sources of oxygen would be a liquid oxygen
container/system or an onboard oxygen generator.
• A liquid oxygen system stores liquid oxygen in a tank, which is allowed
to warm and expand to become gaseous before being sent into the
distribution system.
• An oxygen generator extracts oxygen from an onboard chemical
source. For passenger systems, stand-alone chemical oxygen
generators may be used.
AIRCRAFT OXYGEN
SYSTEM
• Upto an altitude of 10,000 ft, a human
breathing system does not require
additional oxygen/supplementation of
oxygen to sustain the normal body
functions.
• But above this altitude, forced supply of
oxygen is inescapable.
EFFECT ON BODY
Depleted oxygen supply to the body in the altitudes above 10,000ft effects in these ways:-

Judgement error, memory, and inability to make calculations

Anoxia: An absence or deficiency of oxygen reaching the tissues; severe hypoxia.

Expanding the gases confined in the body.

Eventually leads to unconsciousness

EFFECT ON PILOT

The lack of oxygen intensifies the effect of cold on the body.

Anoxia also effects the cells at back of the eye, which are
responsible for the night vision.

To ensure optimum vision and continued functions, an oxygen

system is needed.
Adult humans
inhale between
0.5 to 3.0 liters of
air with each
breath
OXYGEN SYSTEM
They are of two types:-
• Continuous flow type. In this oxygen is
continuously fed to the mask.
• Demand type. in which the oxygen is fed
to the mask only on demand.
BASIC COMPONENTS OF SYSTEM
• Charging valve: It is used for charging oxygen into the system from external
cylinders. Has a pressure regulating valve to reduce the varying high or low pressure
from cylinders to steady value acceptable by the human body.
• Oxygen bottles. Oxygen bottles fitted on the a/c are used for storage.
• Oxygen regulators. Used for regulation of oxygen supply from high pressure to low
acceptable low pressure.
• Oxygen economiser. It eliminates the wastage of oxygen. It supplies oxygen only when
pilot is breathing in. In the demand type, regulator & the economiser are combined in
one unit –demand regulator.
• Flow indicators. Flow indicators give indication to the pilot whether oxygen is flowing
or not. This is a must as pilot will not otherwise come to know about it until it is too
late.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

• No oil or grease is to be used on instruments and pipe lines of oxygen

equipment.
• Wash hands and tools, wipe them off and if possible use special clothing.
• Prevent fats, oil and foreign objects from getting in to the oxygen
system.
• Never leave the ends of the pipe lines & connections of the oxygen
equipment open.
