Industrial Applications of Laser

Lasers are utilized in various industrial applications including welding, cutting, and drilling due to their ability to concentrate high power on small areas. Laser welding offers advantages such as non-contact processes and minimal distortion, while laser cutting provides high-quality edges and programmable processes for mass production. Laser drilling allows for precise hole creation in a variety of materials without the wear associated with traditional drilling tools.

• A laser beam has the ability to concentrate large
power on a small area. This property of laser is
used in a number of industrial applications such as
Industrial welding,cutting,making holes etc.

application • They have a lot of applications in industries.

LASER WELDING

Laser welding has established supremacy over other types of welding such as arc
welding, or electron beam welding.

In laser welding the laser beam is focused on to the spot to be welded. Due to
the heat generated, the material melts over a tiny area on which the beam is
focused.

In this type of welding, virtually no destruction occurs in the shape of work piece,
since the total amount of heat input is very small compared to regular
welding, and the heat is also dissipated immediately.
Advantages of
laser welding

• Laser welding is a non-contact process.

So there is no mechanical distortion.
• Can weld dissimilar metals.
• Can be controlled precisely.
• Produces small heat effected zone.
LASER
CUTTING
• Laser cutting of metals is generally done assisted by
gas blowing. The laser focusing part is surrounded by
a nozzle right at the spot where laser beam is
focused.
• The combustion of the gas burns the metal thus
reducing the laser power requirement for cutting.
• The tiny splinters along with the molten part of the
metal will be blown away by the oxygen jet. The
blowing action increases the depth and also the
speed of cutting.
• It is the laser which controls the accuracy of cutting.
Thus the cut edges will be of very high quality
Advantages of
laser cutting
• Laser cutting is employed in tailoring industry
where mass production is employed.
• The cutting process could be programmed which
results in high production rates.
• The quality of cutting is very high.
• Cutting a complicated profile even in 3 dimensions
is possible
LASER DRILLING

• Drilling of holes is achieved by subjecting the

material to powerful light pulses. The pulses will
be 10^-4 and 10^-3 second duration.
• The intense heat generated over a short duration
by the pulses evaporates the material locally, thus
leaving a hole.
• Nd-YAG laser is used to drill holes in metals,
whereas a CO2 laser is used in case of both
metallic and non-metallic materials.
Advantages
of laser
drilling
• Normal drilling tools wear out when
used frequently but this problem does
not exist with a laser set-up.
• Drilling can be achieved at any oblique
angle through the material whereas it
could be done only to a limited extent
in conventional methods.
• Very fine holes van be drilled with a
laser beam.
• Very hard materials or brittle materials
could be subjected to laser drilling
since there is no problem of
mechanical stresses with a laser
beam.
