Coin Sorter Project

The Coin Sorter Project aims to create an automatic coin sorting device that reduces labor and errors in counting coins for individuals and businesses. The device uses a motor and a ramp with designated slots for different coin types, achieving an average sorting accuracy of 70%. Future improvements will focus on enhancing accuracy and using stronger materials for better performance.

Coin Sorter Project

Dominick Clarke, Kevin La, Jason Molina

Introduction

The purpose of our project is to organize coins with very little labor and effort. It also saves time and

reduces potential human error. Regular people and businesses can use coin sorters to get an accurate

amount of money to process without using much time.

Problem Statement

People and businesses often need to have efficient methods to sort and categorize their coins. Individuals sorting coins

one by one takes an extremely long time, but their counting also may have errors. Through designing an automatic coin

sorter, we aim to take much of the time and labor investment out of counting coins.
Methodology

Our device is turned off and on using a switch, which is located below the coin holder. A motor shakes the coins, and

the coins run down the coin holder at a slight angle. There is a blocker at the opening of the coin holder to make sure

the coins go through one at a time. Once the coins get past that blocker, they run down a ramp. The ramp has holes

based on the size of the coins, in the order of dimes, pennies, nickels, and quarters. The coins run down the ramp and

fall through their designated hole.

Discussion

- In the table presented, the proposed design works as intended. The coins go down the slide and into

the slots with minimal input from the user and the vibration helps with moving a large mass of coins.

Although the design works, its accuracy is less than desirable with the dimes and pennies having

high accuracy, nickels with medium accuracy, and quarters having low accuracy.
Conclusion

- The main achievement of this design is that we were able to transport a large assortment of coins

with minimal human input with the use of a slope and vibration in the design with the materials we

had access at the time of recording

- The main improvement we should strive for in future tests is the accuracy of the coin deposits and

making sure the coin slots are measured accurately with minimal error to make sure each coin goes

in its corresponding slot.

Executive Summary

In the time we spent building our design, we were able to get lots of information from it. For our next design, we need

to use stronger and higher quality materials, so our design can be as efficient as possible. This first design gave us a

great start, as we had an average 70% success rate in total. We want to improve on this design drastically in the future,

so it can be near 100% accuracy.

Recommendations

- The next step for the project is more research and more testing with adjusting key components of the

design. The main goal for future tests is to adjust the coin slots for better accuracy and less margin

for error. The highest priority for modifying the design is making the coin sorter out of stronger

material i.e. 3D filament, wood, or metal with the proper training and tools
